Bushwick Rooftop Benefit Show for the New School Arrestees Ends Up in "Mini-Riot," Public Nudity, Great Irony

On Friday night in Bushwick, there was a "benefit for the legal aid" of the kids arrested during the New School occupation that ended up, by all anecdotal barbecue accounts, in "a mini-riot." The party took place on a Cook Street rooftop, drew a notable amount of anarcho-punks, and was apparently a logistical nightmare: Advaita Vera, My Boy, and the Eskalators all played through a PA that had only one working speaker, the residents who threw the party apparently wouldn't let people into their apartment to use the bathroom, a female friend who was there kept ducking into a nearby bar because the toilet situation was so grim, and lots of other people were just urinating off the building. The band Whack, late after also playing the first night of all-ages spot Shea Stadium, were performing when the cops came to shut things down, but the crowd didn't disperse easily, which led to fighting on the street. Blogger William Dunleavy has photos of a fully naked dude teetering dangerously on beams, people in cuffs, and cop-kid scuffles, which New School in Exile reposted. Anyone else there care to tell us more?

Johnny says:

15 were arrested. One person had their ankle almost broken. From my understanding, most, if not all, are out of jail. Unsure if charges were pressed

The show/party, while it lasted, were alot of fun. Whack and Eskalators blew my mind. Best party bands in Brooklyn.

Hey, I'm the guy who wrote the original article and took the photos of this. (see: nude crust punk overlooking skyline.)

I published a second article to respond to questions and follow up on all the media attention this story has been getting.

It can be found on my blog also, at this link:

Thanks Village Voice for picking it up.
