M.I.A. to Michelle Obama, Oprah: "STOP THE BOMBING OF THE TAMILS IN SRI LANKA"

This amazing photo brought to you by M.I.A.
The weird Time 100 fairy tale gets even weirder for M.I.A.. On Tuesday, she was invited to, and then attended--as this amazing picture to the left clearly shows--a gala at Lincoln Center in celebration of the most influential people list the mag just released. There, she apparently met not just Tavis Smiley (on whose show she appeared back in January), Stella McCartney, and the "Twitter guys," but Oprah herself, who "squeezed my hand so hard, I was convinced she cared." M.I.A. being M.I.A., she also took the opportunity--on her blog anyway--to once again draw attention to the ever more shocking number of civilian deaths occurring in her native country, Sri Lanka. What she wrote:

MICHELLE OBAMA GAVE A SPEECH AND THERE WAS MAD SECRET SERVICE IN THE AIR SO I DIDNT GET TO THROW A PAPER PLANE AT HER SAYING " STOP THE BOMBING OF THE TAMILS IN SRI LANKA"... I MET MANY MORE PEOPLE , SOME KNEW ME , SOME DIDNT ....... I WASNT SURE ABOUT MY INFLUENCE BUT........IF I DO HAVE ANY INFLUENCE, I WISH I COULD GET THE MEDIA TO SPOTLIGHT THIS:

"This" being a link to a Channel 4 new story, "Grim scenes at Sri Lankan camps." Now, the more research we do, the more it seems like the LTTE Tamil separatists are at least as culpable as the Sinhalese government in the ever increasing toll of civilian deaths in Sri Lanka. M.I.A. also linked to another news story, this one from the Times Online, titled "Sri Lanka government admits bombing civilian safe haven"--which, if you had no further context, might you lead you to lead you to believe that the Sinhalese government in that country are the only offenders in the non-combatant bloodshed, although that's not exactly the case. As far as I can tell, they may well be equal offenders: the government is horrendously careless in terms of where they drop bombs, but the LTTE have been accused by people as non-partisan as NPR as having kept civilians in harm's way against their will, whether as human shields or as international-human-rights-outcry-type ammunition.

Regardless, though M.I.A. is probably on the record as being a bit partisan in terms of who she blames for the violence, she has also been incredibly consistent in explicitly making her cause the rescue and reprieve of noncombatants in that country, no matter who's killing them. (Weirdly, this fact didn't make it into Spike Jonze's adulatory bio of M.I.A. for TIME, although she did take the cause up herself in the accompanying video they shot of her.) This is nothing but admirable. (It's also why, for the nth time, we feel compelled to mention how ill-conceived the New York Times's accusation that M.I.A. is "apologist for the separatist Tamil Tiger rebels fighting in the country's long-running civil war" truly was.)

The fact is, and this is the exciting part--the part that we maybe kind of dreamed of when everyone first discovered M.I.A., back in the Piracy Funds Terrorism days and afterwards--people are actually paying attention. In 2009, two years after she released her last album, she's been on Tavis Smiley, in the Times, and even prompted the fucking Sri Lankan Foreign Secretary to tell her to stay in her lane on American television: "I think she is misinformed, and it's best that she stay with what she's good at, which is music, not politics." She's put her money where her mouth is, and consistently used the platform she's earned through music to try to right what is unequivocally a massive wrong in her home country. So whatever else you might say about her, at least admit this: for all the haters and those who also alleged she was some kind of Prince Harry, rather than someone who bothered to acquaint herself of the global poverty of which she spoke from the very beginning, M.I.A. has proved herself beyond a doubt to be someone who cares deeply about unjust wrong things that happen in unfashionable parts of the globe, and she's never hesitated to put whatever shine she's had from her career on the line in order to talk about it.

Sri Lankan government does not even allow any media personnel and aid workers into the "no-fire" zone. And they don't even allow into the concentration camps of Tamils. And that's why Channel 4 has to smuggle camera and take the report as it did.

If you think Sri Lankan government has nothing to hide, then why all these forbidden acts?

Suhir Ponncchamy says:

I really do not understand how and why the Sinhalse do not like anyone telling the truth. They want to claim SriLanka as theirs. They came into than around 368 BC from North Eastern part of current India. Now that is just modern history in that part of the world. Tamils and Sinhalse have been fighting on and off ever since. They did not fight among themselves only during the British rule. the last king of Srilanka to fall under the British was a Tamil. The Sinhalse helped to kill him.

The hatred is deep and well founded. It goes beyond the Arab/ Jewish time span. There has been more blood letting too. I am sure there are Tamils who support the Sinhalese. I am sure there are Blacks who think that Obama should not be the President too.

Bottom line: Tamils and Sinhalese cannot live while one rules the other.

It is very easy to put blame on LTTE. There is no one to defend them. Blaming LTTE is almost like WMD of Iraq. You might find the truth after it is too late.

Tamils ran a defacto state and people lived in peace. Is what is happening right now the solution for 'terrorism'? Who are the terrorists?

Can you believe the land of Bhudha is so bloody?

If Mahavamsa, the hitory of Sinhalese Lanka is to be believed what happend in Ramayana is a lie.

John says:

Zach,

Your writing on MIA is a joke. Why doesn't she also accuse the Tamil Tigers of killing civilians? Or using them as human shields? Or using child soldiers? Or extorting Tamils that live in Toronto and London? Your partisan, uninformed reporting is reprehensible. MIA's apparently "incredibly consistent in explicitly making her cause the rescue and reprieve of noncombatants." Well, to quote Gandhi, "I'd rather be inconsistent than wrong." The LTTE have killed Sinhala civilians and Tamil moderates. Someone who uncritically supports a group like the LTTE does not deserve our support. Want to know what people like her and the LTTE supporters think of moderate Tamils? Read here:

http://network.nationalpost.com/np/blogs/fullcomment/archive/2009/05/06/273175.aspx

She's a symbol of hate, not to mention an overhyped performer. She's put her money where here mouth is? I have no doubt of that. In fact, many Tamil extremists have funded the LTTE, and recently $20M in weapons were captured, but only after 11 year old girls who were forced into fighting blew themselves up.

http://www.smh.com.au/world/kill-or-be-killed-11yearolds-forced-to-fight-for-tamil-tigers-20090504-asm4.html

MIA's "to be someone who cares deeply about unjust wrong things that happen in unfashionable parts of the globe"? Really? Because all she seems concerned about is the establishment of Eelam and Tamils who support the LTTE. Perhaps the "fucking Village Voice" should interview some moderate Tamils. But that would mean doing something called "reporting." Ask MIA these questions, and I bet she'll avoid them by complaining about Sinhala or Sri Lankan government:

1) Do the LTTE use suicide bombers? Yes or no
2) Do the LTTE use child soldiers? Yes or no
3) Do the LTTE kill Tamil civilians? Yes or no
4) Do the LTTE extort Tamils in London and Toronto? Yes or no

Jeevan says:

As a Tamil we need these measures taken by the governments:

* Urge the international community and the UN to ensure the protection of all civilians;
* Urge the UN Security Council to authorize timely and decisive measures to halt mass atrocities in the Vanni region of Sri Lanka, including the dispatch of a Special Envoy to the region, and the creation of a commission of inquiry into crimes under international law committed by any person or entity;
* Demand that the Government of Sri Lanka remove restrictions imposed on access to the conflict zone for humanitarian workers and media and permit international observers in the detention camps;
* Initiate internationally mediated efforts aimed at achieving a durable political solution to the conflict in Sri Lanka.

Once these measures are met then the truth behind what's really taking place in Sri Lanka will come to light. Canadians can give us a voice by signing the petition created by the NDP (New Democratic Party)

Suthan says:

MIA knows the Tamil's pains even she is victim of Singhala racism. But she is talented woman to come to this level like all other Tamils.
Basic problem rose in Srilanka when Tamils became educated in post-independence era and simply jealousy created this issue.

Thos who comment about LTTE should understand they are out come of anger. Where were you all when Tamil democratic parties were masacred?

Where were you all when Tamils were killed in large amounts in 1956,1971,1977,1983 riots?

Where were you all when 100,000 Tamils were killed? Can you give my mother and father back who were killed in Air bombing in 1993 in Jaffna?

They were just teachers and those who write here specially non-Srilankans should understand the pain Tamils have gone through!

So when world is ignoring us it is must LTTE like organanisation will come up and supported?

I know Srilankans don't like us and I wish ever stone they throw on LTTE does bounce them back. Mainly Srilankan racism started this problem and now why you all are pretending like you save Tamils? Why all lies when every Tamil knowns basic problem sstarted because of Singhala racism??

We will continue our freedom struggle even military defat enever will end! Time will come for Tamils! Every pain we resist will make us strong!

ONLY SOLUTION IS GIVING TAMILS BALLOTS TO DECIDE WHAT THEY WANT.

TAMILS' FREEDOM WILL NOT BE GIVEN UP AT ANY COST!

Everybody knows that.

Doublespeak of the West
(By Gomin Dayasri)

Doublespeak is a double barrel name for Western Foreign Policy. Lets examine the varying stands shown to the LTTE and the Talibans-Sri Lankan and Pakistan civilians by the West.

Hillary Clinton says (in a bout of doublespeak?) she "deeply regrets Afghan casualties" in the Afghanistan theatre of war due to overhead bombing by US fighter planes.

Pakistan has declared war on the Taliban militants at the bequest of America. The fighting on the edge of Swat Valley has led to the inflow of nearly 500000 refugees from the war zone.

It is a war designed by United States with active participation and heavy funding against ethnic Pashtun tribesman in the North West frontier carried out by Pakistan on the instructions of White House. These are the tribes that sheltered Osama bin Laden and the Talibans after the attack on the Twin Towers which led to the invasion of Afghanistan.

It was America that assembled the Talibans as an effective fighting formation to be their proxies in their war against the occupying Soviet forces, with CIA funding. The madrasas (Islamic schools) in Pakistan which is alleged to breed terrorism in the Islamic world was created by funding originating from US, Britain and Saudi Arabian sources.

To the United States, the terrorists in Pakistan and Afghanistan on the borders of the North West frontier must be mowed down by helicopter gun ships and heavy armour. Otherwise it is detrimental to western interest. Taliban must be eliminated comprehensively is the western military anthem.

Yet Millebrand or Koucher have not opted to visit the devastated regions in Pakistan and make a humanitarian plea to save the civilians trapped in a war zone where heavy weaponry and air strikes are the order of the day. They have not made an appeal on behalf of the civilians who cannot flee due to a round the clock curfew. The West is not seeking Pakistani military assistance to save the civilians from a war situation. They show no concern for civilians unlike in Sri Lanka.

The Pakistanis or the Afghans do not have a vocal Diaspora with a vote catching machine to deliver voters in the west on polling day.

No Western Power is seeking an amnesty for the Islamic militants. Instead there is rendition to torture camps to elicit confessions. It is conducted on foreign soil to escape from the due process of the law under American territorial jurisprudence.

There are no calls of cease fires from America instead the Prime Minister of Pakistan and the President of Afghanistan are summoned to Washington and demanded the war be intensified to wipe the Talibans from the face of the Earth.

The West is calling on Sri Lanka to enable the LTTE to surrender to an international third party In Afghanistan more Western fighting forces are inducted to fight the Talibans-there is no call for a pause for negotiations or opportunity to surrender to a friendly force. The Nordic countries are not sending emissaries to talk peace. Instead efforts are being made to enlarge the fighting contingent and arming them with modern sophisticated weaponry.

Are we stupid as the West to create Madrasas and Talibans and bin Ladens as surrogates and then be the target of attack and undergo a metamorphosis after 9/11 and then declare war? Is it smart foreign policy that in the American backyard the bulk of the Latin American nations are electing by popular vote administrations hostile to the US? Did not America have to bail out of Viet Nam and Laos?

In the humanitarian lexicon is there a difference between Sri Lankan refugees from Wanni and the Pakistan refugees from the Swat Valley? They are civilians by status and the West sadly is not sending emissaries to speak on their plight. Why not a call for a cease fire for those innocent civilians in the Swath Valley on whom the West has turned a blind eye and are instead firing to kill? Indeed Hillary Clinton admits US helicopter gun ships had targeted innocent civilians. How many children and women died in these attacks? In fact America is persuading the Pakistanis and the Afghan to intensify the attacks.

Has the west forgotten we are providing food and medical facilities to the civilians including the terrorists for the last 25 years during the entire course of the War? Has the West carried on a war while supplying provisions free to the enemy?

The bottom line is what is good for America is not what is best for Sri Lanka. Interfering West do not have our interest in their agenda. We have to steer our ship to suit our voyage. The West will sail with the flag of skull and bones to navigate any country to dangerous waters to extract the best for themselves. We must be circumspect to work on the lines of our priorities.

National Interest of two countries can never be the same.

- using chemical weapons, cluster bombs, thermobaric weapons, heavy shelling on the civilians populated areas by SLA

- food, medicine and other essential items as weapons of choice to kill the Tamils

The Sad plight of S/L is equivalent to a jungle.

Killing/bombing to come to power(food). i.e. Vijay Kumaranathunga, Lalith Athulathmudali, Gamini Dissanayake, R. Premadasa, Gunaratne (major Gunaratne’s son), Lukshman Kathirgamam, JVP leaders who never came to power to name a few that I can recall, of many are whom were presidents/prime ministers/members of parliment, bombed and killed mostly by their successors. Trying to tame only the LTTE/tigers, will in no doubt make the Tamils extinct/genocide and in no favor of the jungle.

This is what India, China and Pakistan are help achieving.

In order to survive in this jungle(country) among political parties/communities one has had to be stronger than it’s opponent which is by fighting, this has been happening to date, but now.. has got worse by the hunger for food (power to survive).

Pointing one finger against the other does no good, as all concerned are guilty of same (terrorism).

The only solution would then be, is to tame everyone, bring them to civilization, not just the LTTE/tamils. This is possible only… by giving Sinhalese/Tamils/Muslims/Burghers equivalent power in par with the number of MP/ministers representing each community, most importantly with international monitoring, overseeing.

This is Democracy, favorable to all citizens of their birth right.

We then urge and plead with the leaders of the world to rectify this current situation, creating peach and harmony in S/L to live in wisdom, godliness, sensibly, righteously, obedient and subject to rulers and authorities, not merely looking out for personal interests, but also for the interests of others, by shunning foolish controversies and genealogies, strife and disputes which are unprofitable and worthless.

Leaders, please……, we then look to you for HELP in achieving this, which is no doubt a difficult task and our prayers are always with you to guide us in this direction!.

all who have commented here for LTTE are brutal terrorists who know nothing about the innocent tamils' conditions under ruthless prabhakaran.

while PRABHA's son and doughter are living in luxury in other countries with these bloody commntors, the innocent children are fighting for them under the force of brutal PRABHA.

you buggers don't know the real situation here.

the reality of war is that it occours for many reasons.

i guess you hope that one of them will be to ultimately bring sustained peace.

whether a ltte or govenment supporter, the one thing we should all agree on, is that the death of inoccent civilians is wrong.

it appears that the ltte are keeping their own people as hostages, human shields, while the government seems to be killing civilans in its over zealousness to kill members of the ltte.

the truth is, that even if the ltte are defeated, the war will truly never end, as im sure surviving members of the ltte will look to regroup and cause destabilisation through programmes of suicide bombing and the like. this together with discrimination of tamils, which may not necessarily be practised by all singhalese, will mean that peace if it does occour is likely to be short lived.

its such a small island, past atrocites shouldnt be forgotten but should be forgiven,

why cant we all just get a long??

Even today there is no equality for Tamils (post war). As soon as the war was over Tamils in Colombo were threatened to buy the Sri Lankan National Flag and hoist it. Furthermore, they would be visited by mobs of Singhalese people asking them for money for celebrations. If they did not provide money then they threatened to come every week to hassle them for money. This is a clear example of intimidation and extortion.

Post War, when Ban-Ki Moon visited Sri Lanka the security forces prevented the Tamil political party in Sri Lanka to speak to him. How is this fair?

In Sri Lanka even Obama can't become president. Why? Because you have to be
Singhalese and Buddhist to be president!
How is this equal?

The war may have lasted for 26 years, but the the discrimination and massacre of innocent Tamil civilians began as early as 1948.

We have suffered too much with all the Sri Lankan governments, with the majority being Singhalese. If the elected government is discriminating Tamils, how can Tamils expect to live in peace? Especially this year after more than 10 000+ civilians have died since 2009?

Furthermore, the Sri Lankan Army who are expected to be protectors of the people sexually abuse Tamil women as a weapon of war. Then they murder them and dispose their bodies. It's not the fact that they rape them..they also murder them and mutilate their genitals afterwards. It's sickening.

Even when the Sri Lankan Army was sent by the UN to HAITI on a PEACEKEEPING MISSION, the 100+ soliders sexually abused Haiti women and young GIRLS> Girls as young as 12..who haven't even started menstruating yet! This is the type of continous ordeals Tamil women have to go through.

That's why a separate state is the only solution: TAMIL EELAM.

Free, Free, Tamil Eelam.
