Zaire-born Marie Daulne fronts Zap Mama at Joe's Pub. Founded as an a capella group in the early '90s, the Belgian ensemble now performs a fusion of Afro-pop and R&B.
Cake, the polarizing and perpetually sour alt-rock staple, plays Terminal 5. The show's sold out, but if you're interested in procuring a tree (and/or privy to the band's ritualistic tree-giveaways), the surest chance of admission is a $100 ticket from StubHub. Prolific MCs Mos Def and Talib Kweli perform as Black Star at Nokia Theater, reviving the collaboration that established both MCs. 88 Keys opens.
Hip-hop pioneers KRS-One and Kool Herc recall rap's golden age at Santos Party House. Meanwhile, we recall a pertinent Sublime lyric: "School ain't ever taught about hamburgers or steak/Elijah Mohammed or the welfare state/But I know/And I know because of KRS-One."
Veterans of Brooklyn's house-party circuit put on a Showpaper benefit at Shea Stadium (not that Shea Stadium, it's a new venue in East Williamsburg). Performances by Dinowalrus, Fiasco, Graffiti Monsters, and Le Rug.
