Jay Leno Scolds Kanye West, Plays The "What Would Your Dead Mom Think" Card; An Appalled Nation Flocks To Letterman En Masse

Now look here. It was a dick move by Kanye, no question -- the farcical situation and meaninglessness of the award itself notwithstanding, the look on Taylor Swift's face as he bratted out for the 15,000th time seemed to be legitimately heartbreaking. (Leno: "When did you know you were wrong?" Kanye: "As soon as I gave the mic back to her and she didn't keep going.") But I say "seemed to be" because it turns out that was nothing, nothing at all, compared to Kanye's reaction when Jay Leno, Mr. Comedy At 10 O'Clock, evokes Kanye's dead mother to shame him. Get the fuck out of here. It was the MTV Video Music Awards. Hosted by Russell Banks Brand. Featuring Lady Gaga. The en-masse-social-media-overreaction-turned-cavalcade-of-racist-dipshits we spent all yesterday putting up with has led to this, a harmlessly petulant rapper publicly forced to give Leno another Hugh Grant moment. Terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible. "You ready to sing?" Jay bleats, and Kanye shrugs, utterly defeated, and then Rihanna, of all fucking people, starts up Jay-Z's "Run This Town," her mere presence reminding us all of what a ludicrous and inconsequential controversy this has been. May this bullshit Leno show go the way of The Magic Hour.

Doug says:

I'm no fan of Leno and the reference to West's mother was a stretch, but this guy's ego needs to be deflated. He's a legend in his own mind and thinks it gives him the right to be disruptive and crude. The fact that Beyonce won the VMA's Video of the Year award later in the show ended up making West look even more like an ass. He needs to learn something about poise, grace and class; people might take him more seriously if he did.

beks says:

It wouldn't matter what kind of award ceremony it was - whether it was just a high school awards or the Nobel prize - you just don't do that to someone for no reason. He deserves what he gets. End of.

Carlos says:

You know what nobody talks about? The fact that Kanye was right. I mean it certainly doesn't justify it, but he did know what he was saying.

pickle says:

How the hell was Kanye "right," Carlos? He behaved in a completely unprofessional manner. Beyonce didn't think he was "right"!

he was right because how do you win video of the year (as a female) and not win best female video

MTV just does a dumb thing to try to appease everyone and its sponsors

Lauren says:

It is a pretty low blow. But i mean kanye did cause quite the scene @ the VMA's. Maby after this moment he will start to think of his mother before he over reacts. It might help him maintain his composure.

Sue says:

It's not like Kanye is a wife beater or a rapist or a murderer, he is a poorly behaved, over-rated, rap artist who was terribly rude to another artist. That along with any other behavior you wish to add to his list does NOT give Leno the right to shame him with the memory of his dead mother and how she might view this. It wasn't that long ago that she passed and it was fairly tragic. If Leno knew Kanye OR even his mother personally it might be only mildly fairer to throw that in his face, but to bring up his dead mother over a childish rant when Leno is not that close to him is unforgivable. Leno was just looking for ratings which he'll need for his terribly un-funny show!

Diva says:

Jay stated that he HAD met Kanye's mother, so maybe he felt like he knew her, and how she'd have felt about his rant.. as far as him being 'right' about how Taylor shouldn't have won, Taylor nor Beyonce had control over the votes, so that outburst was merely Kanye stating his OPINION, not facts.. matter of fact, I don't even recall Bey being up for that particular award, which makes him look like an ass to begin with.. and kudos to Beyonce for her understanding, and giving Taylor her moment!

my irritation with the whole thing is hearing people justify his behavior by saying 'that's just Kanye' or that he's still depressed about his mother- which may be true, but there's NO excuse for what he did to a CHILD.. no one will ever convince me he was right in doing that, whatever his reasoning may have been.. I felt bad for him when he lost his Mom, but he lost my sympathy vote, as well as any other, when he hit THAT all time low!

Try Again says:

Are you kidding Harvila? Kanye is a grown a$$ man picking on a teenage girl and you worry about him being shamed and feeling defeated because of his dead mother? His dead mother failed to raise him properly, obviously. But seeing that she wrote a book called "Raising Kanye", it's a legit question. A grown man can handle being called out and a mother, dead or not, who wrote a book about how to raise a child, can be called on especially when that child totally embarrassed himself and behaved like a brainless juvenile.

And honestly, it never occurred to you for a moment that Kanye did it on purpose? Any publicity is great publicity for him seeing his album sales.

Beyonce's "video" was little more than an excellent Dance Routine with simplistic B&W background changes. Kanye was not 'right'. How B won Best of the Year, I'll never know. People just wanna see her shake her ass, I guess.

Letterman sucks, just like Kanye and you OP.

Posted On: Tuesday, Sep. 15 2009 @ 4:27PM
Ken says:

I agree with Bob, Letterman does suck. He hasn't been funny since the 80's. Jay and Jimmy Kimmel are the only late night shows worth watching now. And one other quick note. I am so impressed with the level of class that Beyonce showed. I'm not surprised, but very impressed. Now THAT young lady was raised right!!! Kudos to her parents!

JoeyW says:

Let me say this. If that was a 17 year old black girl on stage and a white man would have done exactly what Kanye did, the NAACP, Al Sharpton and everyone else in the black community would have been up in arms, picketing the MTV awards, and claiming racial discrimination.

He is a scumbag, and deserves what he gets. Thank you Kanye West for setting the black community back 40 years you retard.

Logan Wenzel says:

Let me guess that a african american wrote this article. Does race always have to be the vocal point. Was race not a point when Kanye called out Taylor Swift? Racism works in many ways. Turn off your tunnel vision and look around. This isn't the 1860's or for that sake the 60's. Kanye is a racist and needs to grow up.

Carl says:

Even President Obama called him a Jackass off the record. Kanye is a Jackass on this I can agree with President Obama!

Carole says:

Beyonce is total class. Taylor handled this so well. Kanye finally personally apologized and Taylor has accepted his apology.

Kanye was trying to steal the thunder, make headlines and he succeeded - time to stop giving Kanye any more publicity. I can guarantee he will be a jerk again.

Taylor should just write a best selling song about it make a video spoofing and win the VMA next year! Boy would that be getting the last laugh!

Posted On: Tuesday, Sep. 15 2009 @ 6:48PM
Ken says:

If Toby Keith had come on stage and grabbed the mic from Rihanna, there would have been looting and riots in the streets, screams of racism, and Toby would have to fear for his life. Maybe that is a racist comment but anyone, black or white, if they are being honest knows that would be the case.

the mac says:

I would have gone off on Jay Leno for asking about my dead mother---Kayne, you apologized for what you did. That is enough. Taylor Swift accepted the apology. She's over it, and stronger than alot of ppl give her credit for being. Jay that was a low blow to ask Kayne's about his mother

Posted On: Wednesday, Sep. 16 2009 @ 6:47AM
From the cheap seats... says:

All,

It was a public gaffe/humilation by Kayne; the apology should have been public to Taylor as well.

He didn't even call her until after she appeared on The View... and probably because of Whoopi's comment; " Kayne, if you are watching this, you know the right thing to do."

I would hate to be Kayne's publicist about now...

3-minds says:

agreed kanye was a d*ck for what he said to taylor, i dont even like her i dont think she is particularily talented but she won and he had no right to do what he did. but i dont really see how that justifies jay leno to shaming him with the memory of his dead mother. isn't that the same thing. and people need to quit wildin out about race i dont remember hearing anyone say anything about colour maybe its your own racism coming out.

no totally wrong of jay and president obama should of called jay a jack &**. How could anyone compare an emotion of your mothers death to the emotion of being embarrassed totally uncalled for and he should of smacked jay in the face.
