Remembering Beau Velasco

Beau Velasco, co-founder of energetic punk outfit the Death Set, was found dead this past weekend, a horrible tragedy announced via the band's Twitter. No details regarding the cause of death have been released.

Under a beautiful mess of loose curls and horn-rimmed glasses, Velasco was a lynchpin of the East Coast DIY scene. He performed in several bands, toured with friends (once serving as a roadie for Japanther), covered himself in art (he worked in Harlem's Black Ink Tattoo Gallery), and displayed his own visual creations at small galleries. He met future Death Set frontman Johnny Siera after a performance by his then-band Black Panda in the quiet town of Gold Coast, Australia. "Beau was the first person I'd ever seen in our small scene that was going absolutely apeshit," Siera once recalled. "I remember him picking up his amp and smashing it against things, and I just made a decision that I was going to play music with that guy. I didn't know how or why, I just knew that I wanted to."

The newly formed band traveled first to Sydney and then on to Baltimore in late 2005, after catching the ear of Morphius Records' Emily "Rabbit" McDonough with their first EP, To, a noisy, catchy 13-minute fiasco. After landing in Baltimore, Velasco moved into the infamous Copycat building (a DIY arts/music warehouse space) next door to Dan Deacon. ("Beau was the definition of a solid guy," Deacon told the Baltimore Sun.) The Death Set quickly became local, hyperactive favorites, befriending other local up-and-comers, including Spankrock and Ponytail. Soon, the band launched a U.S. tour alongside like-minded Austin duo Best Fwends: Those high-energy and frenzied shows propelled the Australians from local celebrities to nationally recognized indie-punk sweethearts.

In 2008, the Death Set released their first full album, Worldwide, to critical acclaim--the catchy, scream-along track "Negative Thinking" became a hit among punk kids, emo tweens, and indie-rock nerds alike. Meanwhile, Velasco moved to Brooklyn to concentrate on other projects: painting, jewelry-making (he helped with Mishka's first piece), and a new musical endeavor, Giantize. Also known under the moniker VLXO, his art could be found at small local exhibitions (most notably at the Arm in Williamsburg). Despite his turn toward the visual arts, it was clear that his love of music reigned supreme. "I don't think I've ever seen him so happy as when he was back on the stage last month at the Bikes in the Kitchen show," says a friend. "Reunited with the whole band."

Friends and family, still reeling in shock, have been mostly quiet since the announcement of his death. Last night's Family Showcase event at Fat Baby--featuring a DJ set by Death Set drummer Jahphet (a/k/a Roofeeo) & Ninjasonik's Telli Gramz--became an impromptu tribute to Velasco, while a more somber-toned Johnny Siera shared his thoughts via Facebook: "RIP my dear brother, friend, and band mate Beau Velasco. We are all so devastated that I will keep this short. We love you and you will be missed. You affected us all so much in the most positive ways. Our lives would not be as is, if not for you. We love you."

I can imagine not seeing his face anymore, covered in Tattoo's and eating dip with crumbs in his beard. I'm happy to have gotten to know him even if only for moments in time. New York is relentless and so is that the life of a creator. We live on for you, hoping to one day lock eyes in a future land.

I have known Beau for 10 years, met him here on the Gold Coast when he was a young crazy kid with too much potential. I watched him work his magic in ways people only dream of, becoming a renowned artist, scratching and MC'ing in the Beat Traffikers, creating art for Dumb Industries clothing label, singing in the Dirty Drug Robot Disco and finally forming black panda then the Death Set, writing songs on a beat up old guitar in his bedroom at Studio 2040 in Miami Gold Coast. I know i speak for all his friends here on the coast when i say that we are forever in awe of his talent, eternally inspired by everything he achieved in his beautiful life and completely and utterly shattered by his passing. I hope with all my heart he is in a better place. We love you Beau, Flo B, MC Catfood. You are always in our hearts x x x

After all the tears have run out, It's still so hard to compute. Those last few weeks calling each other every day, excited like kids in Sydney again. I still can't believe it... Beau you were such an inspiration to me. The fact we made it from Australia to America on nothing but ideas and positivity still amazes me. I'm angry at you for leaving us so soon, but overall I'm thankful for how much you gave to us. Much more in your small time here than many in a lifetime. You were a talented musician, artist and a lil Buddha, teaching so many people so many things that I wish I could tell you.

I miss you man.

Thanks for the article Puja.

I went to school with Beau at TSS on the Gold Coast. He was a very close friend of mine during those years. This is an absolute shock to me and everyone else I have told tonight as I know a lot of our friends have been out of the loop. The world has truly lost a beautiful and amazingly talented soul. We will miss you mate! R.I.P brother................

You put chilli sauce on mountain bread and called it pizza.

You drank my olive oil.

You threw guitars and amps at me at every show.

It pains me to think that I will never hear that menacing laugh again but I feel blessed to have known and worked with such a truely beautiful disaster.

Hi mate really sad to hear about Beau never really new him that well and only saw him a few times out of school but every time he would allways be stoked to say hello and have a chat a really top bloke. I ll never forget one day after school he had his skate board out on the veranda in front of the houses and was trying to jump the stairs on the eastern side witch was a fucking massive feat in it self, he must of done it about 20 times and every time he fell of but was nt stopping till he made it, was crazy man i ll never forget it he had bark hanging of him and bleeding, he was possesed, in the end he made it and were most people would claim it he just smiled and went on his way. Ledgend.

Anything real is never really lost, yet it pains all of those who knew & loved you Beau, to feel you're no longer on this plane with us. Thank you for being true to us all, but always true to yourself - your amazing life, overflowing with all your achievements, will be remembered forever. You've been an amazing inspiration to many, both here in Oz & the world over.
Little Buddha indeed. I look forward to meeting you again.
Blessed Be.

I remember sitting on the L train thinking about who i would get to do my next tattoo..All i knew is that the person had to be great at what they did..then this guy with huge glasses, with what seemed like millions of tattoos sits next me skateboard in hand..i thought to myself hes so cool..obviously doesnt care what anyone thinks..so of course i could not stop staring at you..then you pulled out your drawing pad..flipped through it a little..i caught a few glimpses of your work and you proceeded to draw some simple lettering..it was then i decided to ask you if you did tattoos and if you could do me :)..but for some reason i was totally scared..so i sat there for what seemed like forever trying to build up the courage to approach you..then it cam e to my stop and i still could not do it..so i just got off..luckily you got off right behind me..so after standing there like an idiot watching you walk away..I chased after you..and ask..you were totally cool about me a stranger approaching you and you just gave me your card..i must of sent you a million emails after that making sure you knew exactly what i wanted..I even brought along 2 friends to get tatted..I guess what im trying to say in so many words..is that i did not even know you..but there was something about you that drew me in..i am deeply saddened about your passing..proud that you tatted me..sorry you didnt get to finish it..may you rest in peace!!!!!!!!!!!!
