Farewell Monkey Town

By Zach Baron, Thursday, Dec. 17 2009 @ 4:15PM
Categories: Certainly the End of Something or Other, One Would Sort of Have to Think, Monkey Town

It never really made a lick of sense but that was half the fun. The converted garage on North Third Street in Williamsburg that was Monkey Town is closing, according to Brooklyn Based. Owner Montgomery Knott cites "landlord issues" and gives a hard target for the venue's last day: January 24, 2010.

In the venue's six-year run (counting Knott's early days catering dinners and screening videos at a rented loft elsewhere in Williamsburg), Monkey Town baffled diners with projections of off-brand PSAs and porn and befuddled concertgoers with $9 diver scallops and heirloom martinis. It was a space full of couches, beds, and a formal dining room to boot--something like all things to all people. Say farewell at New Year's Eve (3-course feast for $35!) with Excepter, who may or may not be attempting to play five hours straight as we leave this decade and another well-liked venue behind. At least this time we're not personally responsible. [Brooklyn Based]
