The Life and Death of Alan Carton, 23, the RIAA-Defying Creator of @diditleak

For two years, the Twitter account @diditleak was the secret weapon of online listeners and music critics alike. In real time, the account, which ultimately garnered over 11,500 followers, announced whenever a digital copy of a particularly desirable record first hit the Internet. For that it became a beloved resource of torrent-hungry music fans and writers angling for first listens. Using email tips and message-board-scouring alchemy, @diditleak seemed to know leaks better than anybody on Earth.

The feed's creator was Alan Carton, a then-21-year-old Vancouver film student who worked on the site in total anonymity. On January 5, @diditleak went dark. Its creator's name is only being revealed now because on January 16th, after a long hospital stay, Alan Carton died. He was 23. In his final days, Carton worked on @diditleak from his hospital bed, posting tips about the new Yeasayer record at a time when doctors were saying he could lapse into a coma at any minute. His story--as told by his mother Jennifer to Voice--is unlikely, to say the least.

When Alan was 18, he put off college to work as an electrician in his hometown of Edmonton, Alberta. At work, he'd drop his hammer into the loop of his overalls, where it would brush against a lump on his leg. He and his mother, Jennifer Carton, assumed that the bump was a cyst. But after six months of work, Carton got a biopsy result that indicated that the lump on his leg was sarcoma soft tissue cancer.

"Whatever" was Alan's first reaction. Canadian hero Terry Fox had jogged across the country after losing his leg to sarcoma. Carton, too, could overcome this. But a full MRI showed that Alan had six cancer spots on one lung and nine on the other. The ensuing eight-hour chemotherapy treatments left him drained and unemployed. In his boredom, Carton taught himself how to play guitar and keyboard with computer programs. He entered a MuchMusic music trivia contest and won a new dirtbike that he never got to ride.

After twelve months of radiation, the spots in his lung and the tumor in his leg were still present. Doctors removed 45% of the muscle in his leg, leaving him with a limp and a scar, though his friends didn't mind--Carton's crutches got them good seats at Oilers games. After further visits, the doctor pulled Alan and his mother aside. Carton's lung spots had grown but if the doctors operated, Alan would have nothing to breathe with, leaving a 20-year-old kid strapped to an oxygen mask forever. The doctor told Alan that they were thinking of surgery the following week, but had decided against it. Alan said, "Well I'm glad you're not because we're all going to Calgary for an outdoor concert." Everyone thought it would be best that Alan go out and enjoy the rest of his life.

While her son was in Calgary, Jennifer took a week off work and cried. "I thought, I can't live like this," she says. "I can't just sit here and wait for this boy to die." So instead, she and her son concocted a plan for Alan to live his dream of going to Vancouver Film School, where he wanted to study sound design. They put their home up for sale a month later, the pair made the 10-hour drive from Edmonton to Vancouver with their Shih Tzu, Snowee, talking the entire way. At college, Carton didn't tell anyone he had cancer--neither the admissions board nor his friends. Every ten weeks he would take a weekend flights back to Edmonton for doctor's appointments, returning to school early on Monday morning.

@Uh

Artists/bands see very little of the profits from album sales, all the money goes to the record label. It's especially bad in lesser known bands, at least famous bands get paid for media coverage like tv interviews and stuff.
It's essentially stealing something that's already been stolen.

this story should remind us that we don't take any thing with us when we go.

so, starting another flame war from your moral high horses about the recording executives and mega rock stars not making millions of dollars from digital copies of their music collections, in the comment section to this story, is pretty callous.

i've recorded my own music for over 25 years after spending 3 years archiving all of it to digital i decided to give it all away, it was liberating. if the RIAA has their way what i do will be considered illegal one day.
with more and more people making their own music and sharing it, it can only mean less money for an industry that honestly does not have the best interests of the musicians in mind.

Way to be a complete dickhead. This guy didn't distribute the music, just reported whether or not the albums were leaked. He didn't even mention WHERE they were leaked, so get off your high horse. This guy died way too young and seemed like an amazing young man. He will definitely be missed by many.

Tony C. says:

@ uh - please go sit on a white hot, vertically fixed piece of re-bar, also, downloading music is not wrong. Artists can (and do) make plenty of money playing shows - just because technology has changed and record companies can't keep up doesn't make us all criminals.

Rest in peace Alan Carton, a forward thinking man in backward times - a brother in arms during the great info war.

cipher says:

Piracy is not theft, get it through your thick heads. Piracy copies, theft removes. If anything, it's giving the artists media coverage. Most of the money goes to the record labels, the bands get a higher amount of cash for concerts and anything that doesn't go through the record labels. So give the little guy some recognition and maybe more people will go to their show. Just look at how well NIN is doing.

And R.I.P. Anon, he sounded like a pretty chill dude.

Anon is an inspiration. Someday, someone will follow in his inimitable footsteps and leak significant governmental information every time the corpoRATS attempt to deny human rights to our citizens, or whenever polluters dump, or on neat little methods to hack the tax and other databases which make the privacy seekers' lives quiet hell.

I'd never heard of him til today. Go in peace.

Balance of Power says:

@thetruthhurts

Even if Alan Carton was a criminal, he was probably more well-liked and respected than a guttersnipe like you could EVER hope to be.

That said, what he did was not criminal by a long shot, as has been reported already - he did not distribute nor help distribute leaked material.

What he did do was to help fight against the corporate tyranny of the RIAA and the studios who rob artists of their royalties.

Which is more than can be said by a boot-licking corporate lapdog like yourself.

Alan never made a dime from his site, did it out of a love for music, and most of his tips came from others who knew about it before him
he did not leak the music , only the news that it had leaked

i'm back.
really, i cannot believe the callousness of some people. from the sick person who wrote this: "thetruthhurts - yep it sucks a criminal passed away. sorry for your family and sorry you passed away but he is only noteworthy for being a criminal."
does anyone realize what constitutes copyright theft?
downloading a digital copy of a song does not violate copyrights, taking that song and PROFITTING from it somehow, - that violates copyright.
my advice to any young musicians out there: do not sign the rights of your music over to anyone. do not "get signed", do not buy into the outdated and greed oriented music industry. today you are still free to publish and market your own music - and if the real criminals working for the RIAA have it their way, you will not be able to use the internet for these purposes unless you go through their system. and through their system your music profits them only - you'll make more money and meet more people flipping burgers at McDonalds.

to the parents and family of Alan - thank you for loving your son and trying to make his short life as full as it could be. ignore the haters - it is obvious he was not a criminal.

@WTF.

If you had read anything above your own post, you'd realise the worst he did was inform people that music had been leaked, and didn't tell them where to get it. He therefore did not 'dedicate his life to stealing'. A magazine article about a leaked album is exactly the same thing. Are they stealing?

And the guy had cancer for gods sake. Of course people 'feel sorry' for him. I truly hope you never have to suffer such a horrific disease.

Rest in Peace Alan. I was so fortunate to know Alan and his parents. I am a father and have known Alan for many years. My kids were close to him. I got to watch a remarkable, peacefull, decent and loving young man mature and grow even while fighting this horrid desease. He loved many things like music, his band, concerts, camping, partying, sports, his friends and more. What I loved about him the most was his outlook on life. Very few of his circle of friends never really knew what he was going through...he didn't want to burden them with bad stuff. Alan will always be in our hearts.

I knew Alan from VFS as well. He was a couple terms ahead of me in the Sound Design program, which meant he had a very different schedule from mine, so i didn't know him very well. BUT as I did see him around, I knew he was sweet and hard working. I didn't know he had cancer...only that he disappeared and re-appeared to finish up school. I admired that for whatever reason he'd left (now we all know why), he came back and finished. Clearly he was living his life to the fullest, and I will treasure the few memories I have of him, and admire him always for it. I wish I could tell his family this...even knowing him in passing has affected me, and obviously many others. Truly a wonderful person and spirit.

but to the people bragging about artists earning already earning enough doing live shows: have you ever talked to REAL musicians about this, or do you just assume it's true? I've talked to many of them, and it's just another one of those stupid fairy tales.

you want to listen to music? buy it from your local record store or online. don't have enough money? buy less, then. only buy the things you really want.

Francine Boerm says:

Economic globalisation also sometimes leads to the proliferation or raising of 1 ‘brand’ at the expense of others, frequently undeservedly. So, for example, a gentleman in Madagascar, Ho Chi Minh City or Warsaw might come up with a flavorful new soft drink, but hasn’t much prospect of pinging more than a few percent points off of Coca-Cola’s sales even in his own country. Similarly with music: homogenised hyping of a few artists/acts on global tv leads to massively increased sales for those who ‘make it big’
