Just like they did last year, Rhizome is offering custom ringtones to those who donate to their annual community campaign. In 2008, the New Museum-affiliated digital arts org offered up a song from YACHT and artist Ben Coonley's interview with an "imaginary pony"; this year's selections include local remix champions and True Panther signees Tanlines and the ubiquitously awesome laptop duo Lucky Dragons, alongside stuff from computer artist Travis Hallenbeck and Russian chip-hacker Alexei Shulgin's 386DX. Lucky Dragons On WFMU Last Night/At Light Industry Tonight

DJ/Rupture's Mudd Up! radio program on WFMU hosted Luke Fischbeck's Lucky Dragons yesterday evening--fitting, as the two of them have some old Cambridge history together. The audio is up already, and it includes fun war stories about the band's Cambridge days, lots of well chosen Lucky Dragons outtakes and ephemera, and some good conversation about participatory aesthetics and what exactly the idea is behind having the audience play most of the instruments at LD shows. Old hardcore records and free jazz for the nostalgic win. Those curious about why this band ended up being the sole opener for Thom Yorke's band out in LA last week would do well to listen in. "In those situations, the only direction we can go is extremely psychedelic," Luke says. "There's so many different ways to talk about what happened that night." Lucky Dragons play a Showpaper benefit tonight at Light Industry out in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, doing live soundtracks to Rose Lowder films. More info about that here.

News Roundup: Thom Yorke Announces LA Shows with Lucky Dragons, Weezer Tap Matt & Kim for Halloween, Daniel Johnston's iPhone App, Springsteen at Giants Stadium

--Some will say we have this news item exactly backwards, but, uh--Lucky Dragons are opening for Thom Yorke's newly formed band, a Mad Libsy affair consisting of Yorke, Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, Radiohead's longtime producer Nigel Godrich, R.E.M.- and Beck-affiliated drummer Joey Waronker, and the percussionist Mauro Refosco. To reiterate: Lucky Dragons, a two person, man-woman operation whose sets generally take place in the midst of the crowd as various communal electronics are thumbed and petted, whose micropointillist laptop clicks and cuts are pretty much the opposite of arena- or club-anything, who will probably play the Cake Shop (if not the Whitney, or someone's house) when they next come back to town, will perform at both of Yorke's October 4th and 5th shows in Los Angeles at the Orpheum. For presumably thousands of befuddled people. Lucky Dragons!

Live: Lucky Dragons and Pauline Oliveros Spend Saturday at the Stone

In a Fader TV spot from last June, Luke Fischbeck of Lucky Dragons mentioned that "The last two shows I played in New York, I'd hand somebody a rock and they'd say 'Oh no no, not for me,' and I'd be like, 'It's just a rock.'" Maybe you've been in this situation: A skinny, clear-eyed androgyne hands you a rock, and you are supposed to surrender to the tide of creativity welling inside your heart. So you get the bell or the rock or whatever it is and you make some quiet gesture with it. When you realize nobody has made fun of you, you do it again, louder. Then you look next to you and see that actually, someone else has a bell or a rock, and they're making some gesture with it too, and they're smiling.
