Tonight: Sara Bareilles at the Fillmore at Irving Plaza

Categories: Sara Bareilles

Sara Bareilles's Little Voice is the album Carly Smithson will try to make when she gets booted from American Idol—nominally bluesy, hints of cabaret, mercenary-pop-minded. Smithson will over-sing, of course, which is not a trap Bareilles falls into, largely because she's not capable of it. But limitations are her friends, and her attitude is more candid than Feist's, who has duped cool kids into thinking this kind of simple songcraft is somehow edgy. — JON CARAMANICA

SARA BAREILLES, The Fillmore at Irving Plaza, 17 Irving Pl., East Village.
