Interview: The Big Pink's Robbie Furze Would Really Prefer It If You Didn't Call His Band's Music "Shoegaze"

With an infectious single "Dominos" currently providing the soundtrack to many retail and boozing experiences across the city, British foursome the Big Pink just strolled into town for two headlining nights, a first for the two-year-old London-based band. Their debut album A Brief History of Love, released this past September, blends dirgy, layered, atmospherics and heavy rhythms. And unlike most bands that get lumped into that shoegazer niche, these dudes are more than just an effects pedal gone too far that follows bands of that ilk.

Earlier this week, we spoke with the Big Pink's guitarist/vocalist Robbie Furze over the phone from their tour bus in Boston.

New Big Pink Video: "Dominos"

The Big Pink have released a video for "Dominos," the towering monster future jock jam of a song that anchors the rest of A Brief History of Love, due next month of 4AD. How is it? These guys might want to step their visual game up: the duo haven't even been stateside and we're already a bit sick of their soft-focus, leathery, close-up photography. This song deserved slightly better, dudes! Anyway, it'll be a while before NYC gets anything else--they're playing here, but not till December. [via Pitchfork]

The Big Pink Playing NYC In December, Twice

Well, that didn't take long. The Big Pink, whose live-streaming album has been absolutely slaying us these past couple days, have announced their first New York dates. The band will play the Bowery Ballroom on December 3 and the Music Hall of Williamsburg on December 4. Hopefully the whole thing will be every bit as moody and grainy and leathery as this confusing video 4AD made with the band a month or so back. Anyway, go listen to A Brief History of Love, before we all get cut off August 10. After that, you'll actually have to buy the record. [Pitchfork]

The Dennis Cooper-loving, the Band-referencing, NME-approved London duo The Big Pink are presently streaming the entirety of their forthcoming 4AD debut, A Brief History of Love, over at their website. Bandmembers Robbie Furze and Milo Cordell are semi-reformed digital hardcore refugees with affinities for both gauzy, synthy electro-pop and boss, unfuckwithable drums that can seem looped right off a Led Zeppelin record. Huge stretches of A Brief History turn out to be gazey and emo as hell ("Golden Pendulum," woah); elsewhere, "Dominos" is pretty much the most massive track we've heard in months. The album drops September 14, with a New York coronation TBA.
