Indie Cribz Episode 5: Drummer Carlos Icaza of Los Fancy Free, Who're Playing Todd P's MtyMx Fest This Weekend

carlos-losfancyfree.jpg
Take a guided tour of Carlos's Mexico City house here.

The genius of Todd P's MtyMx Festival this weekend is that he's introducing all of us to a gang of Mexican bands we probably wouldn't otherwise hear. Like Quiero Club, who we interviewed last week, or Los Fancy Free, a psych-garage foursome that the Fader singled out two years ago as a centerpiece of whatever was then the "Mexico City rock scene." Or more specifically, Los Fancy Free's drummer Carlos Icaza, who also happens to be one of the most prolific young drummers in Mexico City, splitting his time with psych-surf Las Comadrejas, '60s-throwbacks El Pan Blanco, and synth goofs Evil Hippie. Just in the last year, Icaza's been in Los Angeles recording with the likes of Jimmy Tamborello, jamming in Chicago with members of Bury My Teeth, and DJing "wild and crazy mexican RnR-soul-punk-psych-funk-tropical-grooves" under the nickname Tropicaza.

Indie Cribz: Matt and Kim's Grand Street Apartment

Matt and Kim live on Grand Street in Williamsburg, their brand-new record is called Grand, and they both really are. Fitting, then, that Brooklyn's happy-rock duo gave us a tour of their Brooklyn apartment, a railroad set-up with no gas, eight-foot-wide walls that are so narrow Matt can touch them simultaneously with one fingertip and one toe (though a butt cramp ensued when he tried to show us), and an "extremely tiny" bathroom where Kim says, "You basically have to take a poop at an angle." Just watch.

Matt and Kim headline the Music Hall of Williamsburg with "secret special guests" tomorrow, January 22. Advance tickets are already sold out. Previous Indie Cribz over here.

Indie Cribz 3: Amazing Baby's Will Roan Shows You His Greenpoint Apartment

Amazing Baby headline the Mercury Lounge on Friday, November 28 and Saturday, November 29. Tickets are $12 and available here and here.

Brooklyn breast-feeders Amazing Baby had already displaced 115-pound monster children and three-armed infants as their namesake's top Google search result when front Baby Will Roan supplanted Meg White for #30 on NME's equally absurd "Cool List." This can only mean one thing: a future Converse deal. Or at least a ventilated shower.

Sneaker sponsorships and model wives and backyard motorcross tracks may very well await--Amazing Baby's Infinite Fucking Cross EP is four songs of sheeny, Pulpy lifestyle-pop, perfect for goosing girls at the Cake Shop. For now, though, Will Roan gets mail in Greenpoint, sleeps on the coach "like an old man," and has tomato purée stuck on his fridge's shelf. Watch out for the toilet-side Penthouse and Will's Xanax eyes in the third episode of our very own Indie Cribz.

The songs featured in this episode are all from Amazing Baby's Infinite Fucking Cross EP, available here for free.

Episode Two
Parts & Labor: Dan Friel's butter-gun, plus Burt the van.
Parts & Labor: BJ Warshaw's old place.

Episode One
Team Robespierre: Mike House's East Village squat.

Indie Cribz Episode 2, Part 2: Parts & Labor's Dan Friel, Plus "Burt"

Professional peenie-doodler Perez Hilton has a mini Golden Doodle and a wall of his face at home; Kim Kardashian has a bathside fireplace. Parts & Labor's Dan Friel, for the win: the Cardboard Records mogul has a butter gun, a medicated cat, and a dirty toilet in his Williamsburg spot. Look out for a comic-book cameo of our very own Whiney in the second part of yesterday's Indie Cribz.

Parts & Labor release their excellent full-length Receivers, out on Jagjaguwar and play Impose's Not-CMJ show tonight, 11 pm, at Death by Audio.

Episode Two, Part One
Parts & Labor: BJ Warshaw's old place.

Episode One
Team Robespierre: Mike House's East Village squat.

Indie Cribz Episode 2, Part 1: Parts & Labor's BJ Warshaw

You know the set-up. 50 Cent's got 19 bedrooms, 35 bathrooms, and a home-movie theater in his 51.657 square-feet manse. Poison-frontman-cum-reality-dating-show-star Bret Michaels has a motorcross track, an outdoor pool table, and a "bedazzled" cattle skull in his 10,000 square-feet Arizona lair. Meanwhile, BJ Warshaw from Parts & Labor has looming gentrification, superhero drawings from Matt & Kim, a gaping bedroom-wall hole in his just-vacated Williamsburg loft. All that and the secret to BJ's girlish figure in Part One of the Second Episode of our very own Indie Cribz.

Tomorrow: Burt, the Parts & Labor van!

Parts & Labor play Impose's Not-CMJ show tomorrow, 11 pm, at Death by Audio, the same day they release their excellent full-length Receivers, out on Jagjaguwar.
