Devotees of Metalocalypse, the Adult Swim animated series created by Brendon Small, know that death metal band Dethklok--performing at the Roseland Ballroom tonight--are at a pivotal point in their career. Last season, after warring egos nearly dissolved the band, we learned that the Metalocalypse has begun and that only the music of Dethklok can save the world.

An Impromptu Interview With Courtney Love On The Occasion Of Her Debut Art Show

CL4.jpg
Curiosity led us early Tuesday evening toward Fred Torres Gallery in Chelsea. Courtney Love, visual artist? That sort of makes sense. Given Love's unpredictable reputation, we were not expecting to see her at the press preview for her debut art show, "And She's Not Even Pretty," let alone have a sit-down conversation with her.

Inside the gallery, we encountered what seems like a show consisting entirely of self-portraits—just about every work has a big-eyed blonde in it—done with colored pencils, watercolors, ink, and pastels on paper. Pain, sex, violence, drugs, and celebrities (including a portrait of Gwyneth Paltrow holding her infant son) feature prominently in the approximately 45 works on display. Handwriting is scrawled on every piece, but it's often anyone's guess what exactly Love has written. A few lines we could make out: "It takes sleeping with a snake like you to rip apart my soul"; "Let you bleed all over me." Ouch.

Exclusive: Stream Psychic Ills' Drony, Glazed New Album Hazed Dream

psychicills_fence.jpg
Psychic Ills have been a New York zone-out institution for a few years now; back in 2006, the Voice even named them the best psych-rock band in New York. And while their musical output has certainly remained nothing short of impressive—a 12-inch through Australia's Spring Press imprint, an odds and sods EP, a remix record as part of the FRKWAYS series, a C40 collage tape—they haven't released a proper studio record since Mirror Eye came out in January 2009, and they haven't been exactly active on the live circuit either. After a brief reorganizing period they're releasing their third album, Hazed Dream (Sacred Bones)... thanks for reviewing it for us, guys. Due October 18, Hazed Dream is a return to their slow-bubbling, organ-drenched art drone, mixing Velvet Underground fog, stoned-out Mercury Rev churn, and long trips in a "Planet Caravan." The difference, as guitarist vocalist Tres Warren is quick to point out, is that the band's re-embraced songwriting—Warren's a fan of murk-funk enigma Jim Sullivan, country-psych footnotes Relatively Clean Rivers and the recent output of his new labelmates. Bassist Elizabeth Hart calls Hazed Dream their most "organized" album, but one listen to this stream of glazed, misty, four-minute drone-pop gems will reveal that it's easily their most accessible one as well.

Brian Wilson: "I'm Not Really Interested" In Reuniting The Beach Boys

brian_wilson_4.jpg

Brian Wilson's interview with the Voice's Stacey Anderson will appear in our June 8 issue, just in time for his residency at Highline Ballroom June 11-13. During the shows, the reclusive genius will perform last year's album of George Gershwin standards, Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin, as well as select Beach Boys hits.

While speaking with Anderson today, Wilson denied the rumor that the Beach Boys will reunite next year in celebration of their 50th anniversary, as reported in Rolling Stone and by the BBC.
