The Voice Stands By Its Mark Ronson Interview

Categories: Announcements

On May 9, Sound of the City published an interview with Mark Ronson by freelance writer Peter Gerstenzang. During the conversation, Peter took detailed notes.

The Q&A contained a statement by Ronson that Amy Winehouse was bothered by Adele's success. Like the other statements in the interview, this one is reflected in Peter's notes.

The Voice stands by Peter's reporting and we stand by the story.

Coming This Week: SXSW Coverage

by Chris Gray

Marco Torres
"What I want from each and every one of you is a hard-target search of every gas station, residence, warehouse, farmhouse, henhouse, outhouse and doghouse in that area."

—Tommy Lee Jones, The Fugitive

You don't have to spend much time at South By Southwest to know that all of the above buildings can and do get used as music venues during the annual music festival. And starting Thursday, writers and photographers from the music blogs of the Village Voice Media empire plan to go to as many of them as possible. Those who were there last year—and saw collapsing fences, singers brawling with audience members, the Austin Police Department riot squad on constant standby, Odd Future all over the place—are wondering what else could happen.

Bushwick's Party Xpo To Reopen as Renovated XPO 929

partyexpo545.jpg
Superchief
A long time ago in a Bushwick far, far away

Party Xpo, an uncommonly resilient DIY space nestled under the J/M/Z tracks, has magically withstood two years of logistical hassles. After opening in January 2010 with a typically cantankerous Japanther benefit show, local law enforcement took notice of the place, paid a few visits, and the space wisely went dry. Then the site's previous tenants--a party-supply store business whose still-lingering "Party Expo" signage inspired the spot's name--not only demanded the current occupants remove the marquee (above), but change the venue's name. The result was Party XPO.

Now, after enduring two tumultuous years of police raids, dry shows, and one especially memorable Wu-Tang video, the Bushwick storefront has evolved again--this time into a "beautiful and safe venue, bar, and practice studio" with actual bathrooms, a "smoking coffin" bar, and a (supposedly/hopefully) forthcoming liquor license. Plus, cats!

From an e-mail circulating sent by one of the space's longtime organizers, Jonny Aquadora:

Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Jon Spencer, And More To Play At Jonathan Toubin Benefit Concert This Friday

jonathantoubin_press.jpg
As you have presumably by now heard, New York Night Train host and DJ Jonathan Toubin was injured last week when a car crashed into his Portland hotel room. On Friday, Brooklyn Bowl will host a benefit concert for Toubin with performanes by Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Jon Spencer's Heavy Trash, Tunde Adibempe's Stabbing Eastwood, Royal Baths, and Reverend Vince Anderson. DJs will include Gibby Haynes of Butthole Surfers, Billy Miller of Norton Records, and Bear in Heaven. The show starts at 10:30, and tickets are on sale now. They're selling for a minimum of $25—though if you so choose, you can donate up to $100, every penny of which will go to the hospitalized DJ.

It's also worth noting that on Saturday, Glasslands Gallery will be hosting its own benefit, starting at 8:30 and featuring Xray Eyeballs, The Stalkers, K-Holes, and an acoustic Frankie and the Outs set. Full release about Friday's show below.

Yo La Tengo's Eight Nights Of Hanukkah Will Again Take Place Over (Yes) The Eight Nights Of Hanukkah

yo la tengo.jpg
Which is a sort of snarky way of saying that tickets for this year's Eight Nights of Hannukah celebration go on sale tomorrow at noon. For those unfamiliar with the tradition, every year Yo La Tengo brings together a bunch of friends whose identities "will not be divulged until the last possible moment" together for eight shows to celebrate the festival of lights. Guests usually include musicians (everyone from David Byrne to Sun Ra), comics (Sarah Silverman, David Cross, Todd Barry, etc.), and all-around cool people (Robert Sietsma!), and every cent of profit goes towards local charities and institutions. Tickets are going at 35 dollars per show—pick them up at the band's website or at Other Music in Manhattan or Tunes in Hoboken.

It all starts at 8 p.m., although the show itself doesn't kick off until 9. Please come. Hey, it's not like you'll be able to travel to another borough or anything, right? [Pic via MTV Newsroom]
