The Case Against My Bloody Valentine's mbv

mbv.jpg
Gotcha with the headline, but I'm not here to hate on mbv. I'm a fan. I've daydreamed a dozen Loveless follow-ups, but I wasn't satisfied with the ones in my head-- I needed to hear what Kevin Shields had crashing around in his. mbv is not quite what I hoped for and not quite what I expected, which is why it's such an exciting record: all my educated guesses based on the Lost in Translation soundtrack and the "Map Ref" cover and the jungle-obsessed interviews were slightly off the mark. mbv still surprised me constantly. I love it, and I'm glad many other fans are enjoying it as much.

Does Soundgarden Have Any Business Reuniting in 2012?

Soundgarden: Back When They Were Young Pups

For a band of impressive magnitude -- an unholy sum of Chris Cornell's wails, Kim Thayil's strangely tuned, beautifully heavy guitar, and the Zeppelin/Sabbath-indebted rhythm section of bassist Ben Shepherd and drummer Matt Cameron -- Soundgarden's return from their decade plus absence has been kind of tentative. First some live shows, playing all the hits and dusting off a Badmotorfinger b-side, then a contribution to The Avengers. It took a year and a half of being into this reunion thing for Soundgarden to get blunt and definitive. We were introduced to their comeback album King Animal by way of "Been Away for Too Long," a song that awkwardly stampedes into a bland chorus repeatedly proclaiming they've, well, been away too long.

Soundgarden is both the '90s band you'd most want back and least want back, and kind of for the same reason. They left behind a pretty impeccable catalogue, and the prospect of these four guys making music together seems promising even if their genre has long since vanished.

Soundgarden perform tonight at Irving Plaza.

D'Angelo Offers Two (Awesome) Peeks At His Long-In-The-Works Third Album

It is hard to not root for D'Angelo, the long-dormant R&B genius who, in the 12-year (!) period between his classic album Voodoo and now, has had run-ins with the law and mean-spirited internet giggles directed his way. But in December, Roots drummer and longtime collaborator ?uestlove told Pitchfork that the singer's long-gestating followup to Voodoo, James River, was almost done, and that it would be pretty mindblowing. D'Angelo's getting back in the swing of things with a couple of shows in Europe; last night in Stockholm he played the first, and yes, there are clips of them online, and yes, he threw a couple of new songs onto the set list. And they are really really good.

Those Of You Who Missed New York Noise Can Enjoy Weird Vibes, Now Streaming At MTV

That chyron makes being a buzzband sound a lot more fun than it is.
Last year the local-music show New York Noise was unceremoniously given the heave-ho by NYC TV, but creator (and NYC indie-scene lifer) Shirley Braha has returned with a new half-hour video show on MTV Hive, the indie-leaning, surprisingly content-rich offshoot of MTV.com that's also serving as the online home of the revived 120 Minutes. Behold Weird Vibes, an every-so-often program with Trapper Keeper-meets-Mac Classic aesthetics that will somehow fit six videos in its half-hour running time. The debut episode's roster includes clips by Shabazz Palaces and Vivian Girls, as well as an investigation into how being a buzzband isn't as, well, buzzy as it might seem, with testimony from the likes of Tanlines, Frankie Rose, and others. It's especially grueling when your music gets called, ugh, chillwave. Watch below!
