Last Saturday marked Record Store Day, a global celebration that encourages folks to head down to their local record store and buy some vinyl. Pleasantly, the initiative has done wonders for local businesses. Besides boosting sales, Record Store Day also offers an invaluable service to writers: It presents us with a peg to hang our "Vinyl is Back!" stories.

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Beacon Theatre - 1/15/13

Frreebird cocktail special560.jpg
Better Than: Hearing a drunk crowd shout "Freebird" at a concert where the annoyed band onstage did not write and will not perform said timeless classic by that name.

It would have been Ronnie Van Zant's 65th birthday had he not perished--with other members of Skynyrd and their entourage--at the age of 29 in a 1977 plane crash. But kid brother Johnny has been doing him proud since 1987, and at the Beacon Theatre last night, the sometimes-stoic singer was engagingly animated, commanding the stage and leading the band through a quite-amazing amount of classic rock radio standards.

Ten Things We Hope To See During My Morning Jacket's Three Day Port Chester Run

Ryan Mastro
When My Morning Jacket play live, they tend to come off as an elemental force. They play three hours, paradoxically leaving you wanting more and leaving you absolutely spent. MMJ gives everything live, but also requires a lot of you, pulling you through blissed-out calms into twisting, peaking jams and one epically emotive chorus after another. They're live shows become a religious experience, where fans track recordings of each concert, or make pilgrimages cross-country to see MMJ's marathon sets at Bonnaroo, or at Madison Square Garden, or both. A rare feat.

En Vogue
This Friday, one of the '90s most prominent r & b groups, En Vogue, returns to B.B. King Blues Club for a night of some of this generation's most satisfying soul music. While it was originally scheduled to be a 20th anniversary reunion tour, disputes this year within the group have left En Vogue as a trio of original members Terry Ellis, Cindy Herron and frequent fill-in Rhona Bennett. While the line-up may change, the music and memories they've created in the group's two-decade span are truly timeless. Here's our reminder why En Vogue is among our all-time favorites.

Cake Shop's Successful Fundraising Campaign: "For Now, That Was The Piece We Needed"

The Lower East Side venue Cake Shop has been on a desperate mission to keep its doors open. Staring into the pending end of their original 10-year lease, and owing back rent, higher-than-expected taxes, and other fines, the cafe-slash-rock club started up a fundraising drive on PlegeMusic.com in May. The drive ended on Monday, August 6, and the club successfully reached its goal, raising more than $22,000.

"We would've liked to have made 250% of that, to be able to really pay off everything and move forward," says co-owner Nick Bodor. "But for now, that was the piece we needed, some leverage to go into the negotiations with the landlord on the new lease." They still owe their landlord about $20,000 in addition to other expenses, but the fundraiser gave them the hope and incentive—not to metnion the straight-up cash—to stay open.

Listen To Charli XCX Ride The New Wave Chill With "Nuclear Seasons"

charlixcx_promo.jpg
My favorite single of 2011 so far is Charli XCX's "Stay Away," a downer powerhouse with cavernous drums, lyrics that straddle the gap between brokenhearted and surly, and a storming chorus. Last month the British singer released the followup to "Stay," and it's a fine match for the first day of November and the temperature dips that are imminent; called "Nuclear Seasons," it has similarly grand ambitions, a blown-out FM radio speaker feel, some pretty excellent usage of synchronized "ahhh"-ing, and a pre-chorus that pays a very direct homage to Talk Talk's "It's My Life." Listen below.
