When Sandy came to town, she forced the frigid East River waters through Red Hook like a sieve, leaving a wake of waterlogged bedlam behind and destroying countless people's lives and livelihoods in the process. Purveyors of all things rockin', Norton Records suffered heavy casualties when their Van Brunt Street warehouse took more than four feet of water, destroying the majority of their countless, well-adored rockabilly and garage rock releases in the process.

Following the news of the unfortunate sizable damage to Norton Records, another label based in Red Hook, New Amsterdam Records, has had its headquarters devastated in the storm, including 70% of the label's CD inventory, which the artists themselves actually owned (the label held them as storage but 80% of their album revenue goes directly to the artists). All financial records and backups were destroyed, along with countless pieces of musical equipment from amps to vintage synthesizers.

Jersey Native Nicole Atkins: "Every Place That We Grew Up Going To Is Just Ripped Apart Or Gone."

Nicole-Atkins560.jpg

Before heading back into the studio to record her forthcoming album, Nicole Atkins packed up her guitars, her record collection and the rest of her apartment in Brooklyn and moved back in with her parents in Shark River Hills, New Jersey, about two months ago. Her three guitars found a new spot downstairs in the basement of the house she grew up in, and Atkins lugged one of the boxes of records upstairs to her bedroom. When word got around that a terrible storm was gunning for the East Coast last week, the singer-songwriter called home to check in with her folks only to hear the worst: the roads were flooding, the winds had revved up to 80 miles-per-hour gusts and the house next door was burning to the ground.

Brooklyn's South Sound Studio Completely Destroyed By Sandy

SandyStudio4560.jpg

Hurricane Sandy has completely destroyed Brooklyn recording studio The South Sound.
Located at the mouth of the Gowanus Canal, the 7000 square foot music and arts building
which records bands like Beach Fossils, The Melvins, and Wild Arrows stood no
chance against the flood waters that rushed in Monday night. The four co-owners -- John
Lamacchia, Mike Law, Andrew Schneider and Jeremy Scott -- estimate the damage
totals over a half a million dollars and over 50 people's creative spaces are gone.
