Hey, Look, a "DIY Bushwick Music Festival" Starts Tonight

backgrounddiybushwick-200.jpg

Our collective obsession with another inaugural festival distracted us from a much more humble one happening right in our own backyard. Tonight, the first annual "DIY Bushwick Music Festival" commences, and though we're cynical fuckers leery of anyone using those three oft-abused letters to promote their enterprises--if you're offering that sensibility, you shouldn't have to advertise it--we'll give this one the benefit of the doubt. More folks throwing shows off-the-beaten-Bowery path is a positive thing, right? In any case, by the looks of the schedule, this is Northside Fest's baby brother, with four nights of shows in ten different venues, including Goodbye Blue Monday, Don Pedro's, Eastern District, and Bushwick Music Studios, whose owner is the person behind the fledgling fest. Highlights include itinerant thrift-store orchestra the Eskalators, 8-bit duo Graffiti Monsters, YIMBY art-wobblers Glass Ghost, Elliot Smithy songwriter Archipelago, everywhere dance-dude Anton Glamb. Lastly, if you'd like to offer your pro-bono flyer design services for next year, pretty sure these guys would happily take it. [Free Williamsburg]

Glass Ghost Do Daytrotter

YIMBY-fied Brooklyn duo Glass Ghost were in Rock Island, Illinois recently, debuting two new songs on Daytrotter's newest session. One is about having "a vision of a tiger's face"; the other is called "Bright Circumstance" and turns out to be pretty much self-explanatory. They also do Idol Omen songs "Divisions" and "Like A Diamond," the latter of which is apparently destined for HBO's new Jonathan Ames-written, Jason Schwartzman starring Bored to Death. The set-up? "A scene where someone is smoking invincible pot." [Daytrotter]

New Glass Ghost Video: "Like A Diamond"

Brooklyn art-wobble duo Glass Ghost--whose "The Same" we featured last month--have premiered a new video for choice Idol Omen track "Like A Diamond." Where falsetto bandleader Eliot Krimsky checked J. Dilla and Fear of a Black Planet by way of explaining the muted funk of "The Same" back in August, "Like A Diamond" is a more straightforward kind of a downer--lots more empty space, plangent keyboards, etc. The washed-out, green-screened video matches up nicely: it's like "Heavy Metal Parking Lot" or Cassavetes, except even less happens. Brooklyn's Glass Ghost are throwing their tilted hats into the ring of bands like Dirty Projectors and Deerhoof and Dodos--you know, that irresistible, disjointed mix of pop hooks and Beefheartian abandon. But underneath Eliot Krimsky's wavering falsetto and mashed keys lies a funky center--drummer Mike Johnson's crisp drum beats (a mix of live and programmed), which echo J. Dilla's perfectly imperfect productions. Krimsky and Johnson both did time in New York's mellow art-flutter crew Flying, and after the break-up they have seemingly let their funk flags fly. Their debut album, Idol Omen (due October 27 on Western Vinyl) has the same naive lilt of Flying, but puts new emphasis on broken grooves and hip-hop-centric beats. First taste "The Same" starts as Brooklyn art-warble but quickly dives into a Shawn-Lee-ready funky calliope and the type of ill-tempoed drum breaks that the Dust Brothers could sample--but, of course, with a sensitive soul somewhere underneath. We recently spoke with Krimsky and drummer Mike Johnson about the song.
