Ten New York Bands You Should See At This Weekend's Northside Festival

makingfriendz.jpg
Making Friendz (aka Tami Hart) plays Shea Stadium tonight.
Northside Festival starts tonight! Finally, your very own chance to see the best emerging local bands taking over Brooklyn bars for four nights... or as we like to call it, "pretty much every weekend in New York ever." We here at Sound Of The City are ecstatic about this weekend because we know that nothing lures music fans out to an $8 night at Glasslands like the privilege of piggybacking onto $200 "preferred seating" for a Wavves show.

Excuse the snark, but seeing local bands should be your hustle year 'round. But if you need a goofy wristband and a bag full of worthless promotional swag to do it, here are 10 YIMBY-endorsed local bands you should catch at Northside (or, uh, anytime, really), with handy links to interviews and MP3s.

Kid Sister, Penguin Prison, Javelin, Etc. Tapped For The 2010 Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival

BEMF flier.jpg
Now in its third year, the Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival is fairly self-explanatory as these things go, cramming as many DJs, producers, and dance-music luminaries into one warehouse as possible (the Juan Maclean headlined last year's model), only this year they're moving up in the world, both in quantity and quality: BEMF 2010, set for December 18, will take over both Public Assembly and the Music Hall of Williamsburg. That Kid Sister is headlining seems to indicate no one's taking themselves too seriously here, which is a relief, actually. The full lineup as of now:

The Music Slut began posting five years ago, and to celebrate, the localish pop blog invited some of its favorite bands to play to a captive audience on the Marco Polo Cruise boat Half Moon. And we must admit: cruising down the East River, past Governor's Island and right up under the Statue of Liberty, was pretty lovely. The Music Slut doesn't cater to any particular niche sound, so the diverse line-up wasn't surprising: I Love Monsters, a pop-punk band from New York; Keepaway, the darlings of the post-MGMT, young Brooklyn scene; and Javelin, the dance and beat-box duo known for their eclectic sample recreations and intricate compositions. Thank god the show gods decided to take the humidity down a notch.
