Live: James Murphy DJs Hudson Hotel, Momentarily Pulling Us Away From the Lower East Side

​When you hear that James Murphy is DJing a Fashion Week party, you go. You just go. Noting that we had to be back downtown at midnight ("We'll just go for an hour, guys, it's James Murphy!"), we rallied our A team for the second time this month and jumped on the A train uptown to the Hudson Hotel.

James Murphy Is DJing for Free at the Hudson Hotel Tonight

DFA Records have been curating Wednesday nights at the incongruously uptown Hudson Hotel since the end of August, but label boss James Murphy has been away, playing big deal European festivals with LCD Soundsystem. They go on tour again (with Sleigh Bells!) starting next week, but in the meantime, Murphy's taking his turn on the decks at the Hudson tonight -- for free. It's not quite a full-blown show, but dude playing records live has never not been a sure thing, and it happens less these days in NYC than it used to. Plus, there's some sort of secret special guest -- not a lot of bad possibilities there. Starts at 9 p.m.; here's the flyer:

Last Night: DFA Brings Downtown Cool Uptown To Hudson Hotel

​We very rarely find ourselves leaving the safe confines of downtown Manhattan during a weeknight outing. Anywhere north of 14th Street seems impossibly far and unfortunately stereotyped. But when we heard that DFA -- one of our favorite dance labels -- was starting a new Wednesday-night party at the Hudson Hotel's Private Park, we made a face, complained about having to take the the train "all the way up there," and then rallied.
