That Bush is a Real Comedian

Last year, he joked about WMD. This year, the joke's on him. And on us.

The Bushes on stage at a recent event called "Helping America's Youth." So far, more than 1,000 of those youths have died in Iraq in the war that Bush's handlers and Tony Blair cooked up.

Families of dead U.S. soldiers didn't think George W. Bush was funny in March 2004 when he joked at a D.C. press corps dinner about his not being able to find WMD in Iraq. As the AP reported at the time:

Bush provided amusing descriptions of photographs Wednesday night [March 24, 2004,] during the annual dinner of the Radio and Television News Correspondents Association. Some showed the president in awkward poses as he looked behind furniture in the Oval Office. For those photos, Bush told the audience, "Those weapons of mass destruction have got to be somewhere ... nope, no weapons over there ... maybe under here?"

Laughter erupted from the crowd of journalists, politicians, and their guests then and at other times during Bush's remarks. For years the dinner has featured political and topical humor, most of it playful, if barbed at times.

Well, that lame-ass joking around just got even less funny last night with the revelations from Great Britain that Bush and Tony Blair cooked up their invasion of Iraq in 2002 and, according to previously secret memos, schemed to cook up the WMD justification only later. (See my two previous items for links.)

On the other hand, I do think it's darkly hilarious that while the Brit papers were reporting these blockbuster memos they'd obtained, D.C.'s journalists were yukking it up last night with the lying POTUS at the annual White House press corps dinner, where they all rubbed elbows with celebrities.

Laura Bush stole the show, say the headlines in U.S. papers, by making fun of her husband. Just something else to warm the hearts of those dead soldiers' families. The guy is just hilarious.
