Jesse Helms Finally Dies

Posted by Harkavy at 12:08 PM, July 4, 2008

Jesse HelmsIf we're lucky, he took some of his bitter bigotry with him.

Jesse Helms, an unrepentant supporter of unnatural causes throughout his life, died of natural causes this morning at the age of 86.

The only sign of moderation ever shown by the longtime North Carolina senator was his decision to stop saying the word "nigger" when he was likely to be quoted in public settings.

The death of Helms is just about the best birthday present the United States could wish for on July 4. Free at last — of Jesse Helms.

While the networks and most of the press will soft-pedal his virulent racism and reckless disregard for the First Amendment in his hounding of artists, foreigners and many others, Helms stayed his divisive course until the bitter end — at least until the end of his public career.

After building a reputation as a frankly speaking bigot, Helms ended his public life as a liar who whitewashed those previously bold stands.

In a 2005 review of a Helms autobiography and a Strom Thurmond biography, Michael Lind noted in the Washington Post:

Like Thurmond, Jesse Helms, a fellow Republican who served as a senator from North Carolina from 1973 until 2003, symbolized the white Southern backlash against racial integration and social liberalism.

Helms gained a political following in the 1960s as a commentator on Raleigh's WRAL-TV and the Tobacco Radio Network with his denunciations of the civil rights movement, liberalism and communism.

As a senator, he explained that he voted against Roberta Achtenberg, President Clinton's nominee for a Housing and Urban Development position, "because she's a damn lesbian."

When Helms encountered protesters during a visit to Mexico in 1986, he remarked: "All Latins are volatile people. Hence, I was not surprised at the volatile reaction."

In 1990, Helms stayed away in protest when Nelson Mandela addressed a joint session of Congress.

You would never know any of this from Helms's bland new memoir, which passes in silence over the Dixiecrats in 1948 and the civil rights revolution.

Even though America has undergone many changes since the days when the word "nigger" was freely used, it's vital for us to not ban the word. We need it, in context, to accurately record our history. Black man Randall Kennedy, author of the book Nigger, has argued that point recently in "A Note on the Word 'Nigger' ":

To paper over that term or to constantly obscure it by euphemism is to flinch from coming to grips with racial prejudice that continues to haunt the American social landscape.

Jesse Helms was such a radical that he was able to fan the embers of prejudice even when he spewed the milder N-word with malice aforethought.

In "Dr. Jim Crow," a 2003 article in the Journal of African American History about the post-World War II desegregation of Southern medical education in North Carolina, Karen Kruse Thomas noted:

During the 1950s and 1960s the [University of North Carolina's] controversial role in desegregating Southern higher education would be subject to radically differing interpretations.

To white progressives, UNC was leading the way toward harmonious race relations, while white segregationists generally subscribed to Jesse Helms's notion that UNC stood for "the University of Negroes and Communists."

Many black North Carolinians were convinced that the university would never overcome its 160-year history of excluding members of their race.

The death of Helms, particularly on Independence Day, helps.

And it's fitting that he should die during a presidential race that features young black man Barack Obama.

Whether or not Obama wins, the death of Helms and the ascendancy of people like Obama represent at least some sign of progress in America.

Wow. Hate even in death. Your version of tolerance is pretty intolerant.

HARKAVY REPLIES:

Hate in life is a hell of lot more harmful than hate in death. I prefer to point out what Helms did when he was alive -- and to mourn for people who still have struggle against what he stood for.

Posted by: North Carolinian at July 4, 2008 12:36 PM

Is this a turning point for the U.S.? I can't wait to see the comments.

Posted by: Northener at July 4, 2008 12:37 PM

I think I'm going to puke watching the politicians downplay the rottenness of Helms' soul. Good riddance.

Posted by: Mike at July 4, 2008 1:19 PM

Watch the media do Helms tributes, and soft pedal the racist, homophobic, lethal Southern bigotry that he championed all his life.
Don't forget the Senate and House tributes soon to come, and then ask yourself- what the country stands for-and who represents it.

Posted by: warren leming at July 4, 2008 2:34 PM

I was once listening to David Brinkley on NPR. He said that when he was at WRAL, and reporting about desegregation efforts in Charlotte, "the station had a local tinhorn come on after me, and expose my lies." He then said as a result of that exposure, "that tinhorn was elected to the Senate, and he's still there...Jesse Helms."

He and Falwell: good riddance.

Posted by: misha at July 4, 2008 3:20 PM

Hey North Carolinian--
go fuck yourself! You should be ashamed to even admit you come from the benighted state that elected and re-elected that evil scumbag.

Posted by: GiorgioNYC at July 4, 2008 3:48 PM

Jesse Helms represented everything that America shouldn't be.

Posted by: BoomerNavy at July 4, 2008 3:58 PM

Also raised a southern gentleman, my mother taught me always to look for the good in people and to honor life at death. Yet she also taught me to be honest, speak the truth, and treat others with kindness and love.

I am struggling with how to reconcile these two virtues. I am left very sad -- not at the death of an enigmatic man. But rather that he ever lived and was able to rise to a position of exalted reverence within our government. Damn this man. And may his memory live on to teach us all how easy it is to lie to ourselves about what is good and what is clearly evil.

He may be gone, but MANY MANY MANY of us AROUND this COUNTRY are GLAD he said, did & upheld what he DID!!! Good riddance MAYBE, but like Obama, they BOTH will be THOUGHTS come late NOV..But PLEASE, SOMEBODY..do us a FAVOR..find us a PRESIDENT because these 2 TWITS "prentending" to run now are IDIOTS!!

"Hate in life is a hell of a lot more harmful than hate in death."

No, actually it's not. You're the one who's still being harmed and yet you're the one prolonging the violence.

Learn to let it go. I know, in this type of forum where you feel the compulsion to answer anyone who doesn't agree with you (note the 4 prior posts), you'll probably fall into the same habit of wanting to prove yourself right. A clever turn of phrase; some deconstruction; a justification... who knows how it will manifest. But it's meaningless. You're the one promulgating the violence now. So, let's just say I'm doing a McEnroe... I'm arguing for the "next call" which, hopefully, may dawn on you tomorrow, next month, next year, maybe before you reach 84 years old. Best of luck with it.

Harkavy replies:

Yes, I'm "prolonging the violence." My argument, Mr. McEnroe, is with those who focus on respect for the dead when it's the people who are alive who are the ones who need it.
I'm trying the counter the malarkey prompted by Helms's death, such the president's calling Helms "a tireless advocate for the people of North Carolina." As a race-baiter, yes, he was tireless.
Why not pick a quarrel with Bush? He's still alive, and what he said about Helms is an insult to not only black Americans but to white Americans as well.
Ball's in your court.

Posted by: Frank at July 4, 2008 6:08 PM

No loss. He was a divider and a hater. Why does it have to be you're right and I'm wrong? Why isn't it just different. If his Bible teaches that level of hate and intolerance, I'm not interested.

Posted by: Rachel at July 4, 2008 6:08 PM

The White House issued a statement calling this scumbag a "great patriot". That is a slap in the face to all those who, because of the color of their skin, the country of their origin, their religious affiliation or sexual orientation, found themselves on the wrong end of Helm's hate-filled glare. It is also a slap in the face to all the white heterosexual Christians who, though they may have passed Helms' "smell test", still found his senseless vitriol offensive and disgusting.

There was nothing "great" about this man. He was an ignorant, redneck bigot who somehow found a welcoming place around this country's seat of power. The only difference between Jesse Helms and scum like James Earl Ray is that Helms got elected to the Senate before he could point a rifle at Martin Luther King.

Posted by: ReadBooks at July 4, 2008 6:37 PM

I don't care how vociferously you disagree with everything Helms stood for. To state in a headline that someone has "finally" died is utterly contemptible and brings you down far lower than the person you're criticizing.

Further proof that, its journalistic pretensions notwithstanding, the Voice is still just a crude rag.

Growing up in the research triangle area of NC during the 1950’s and 1960’s, I remember listening to his vitriol spewing out of the family radio and, despite my relative youth, remaining genuinely appalled that a so-called adult would be permitted to express such shameless racist prejudice on public airways. How terribly unfortunate that this angry, narcissistic wanna-be enjoyed such a long and destructive presence in the public sphere. The fact that this scourge represented NC contributed significantly to my decision to leave a state I had always loved. Regrettably, he lives in infamy garnering appropriate Tarheel shame. He contributed nothing and stole fraudulently from all of our well-being.

Posted by: Sgt. Hartman at July 4, 2008 11:30 PM

Jesse Helms.........I haven't thought about him in some time. That realization by itself is heartening. While other demagogues certainly still exist, Jesse revealed himself thoroughly. Through him, even though now gone, his passing will teach us more about our government and our media by their responses. Ignoring him and his passing is perhaps worse than justifying or apologizing for his actions. Now is the time to remember and think about the hate he peddled, and how others using the same techniques to gain and maintain power and position are doing the same.

Posted by: JP at July 5, 2008 2:10 AM

For all the hate you're spewing at Jesse Helms, however deserved it might be consider this. Barack Obama is the flip side of the coin. He's playing to all the same fears and race hatreds, just doing it for the other side with more style.

Posted by: OldMan at July 5, 2008 9:40 AM

The article's author maintains that there is little to nothing to have liked about Helms. Likewise, there's little to nothing to like about someone who revels in the death of another person. I find this article distasteful.

Just because you are too liberal to understand that he was just promoting proper life in America does not give you the right to speak badly about this great American.

God Bless America, and thank you for giving us the pleasure to know Jesse Helms.

What a glorious holiday, Jesse Helms, is dead. What a great country this is, when a racist bastard like him, can die on Independence Day. I hated, that filthy dog, and I'm glad, that he is dead. I had a list of people, that I wanted outlive, and he was on the list. I hope that his filthy, racist, dirty soul, rots in hell. I can hardly wait for that fat, gay fuck, Rush Limbugh, to die. There are few people that have lived lives so full of hate and ignorance, that people actually rejoice at their death. Helms is one of them. Jerry Falwell was another. Slowly but surely these stains on the American legacy are disappearing! Any politician who used this mans death to bestow any sort of praise upon him should be ashamed of themselves. This includes the White House Spokesman and a number of his Republican colleagues in Congress. If only the mainstream media could grow a pair and attack him in his death just as he attacked so many during his life. REJOICE AMERICA !

Clearly, Jesse Helms was a man who served SATAN and the forces of Hate and Evil.

Anyone who disagrees obviously admires Helm's Evil and bigotry, and is clearly Evil themselves.

This ain't rocket science.

That's precisely my point and I appreciate your acknowledging it; that's rare on a blog. Most people don't know how to count coup in an intellectually honest way. Thank you for that.

Mr. Bush's views about Mr. Helms don't concern me. I have my own. What I'm trying to get across is that whether it's Helms, Bush, or anyone else promoting hate, it's still hate. And the only way to stop it is to stop.

I'm reminded of the Melissa Etheridge song Silent Legacy. "Refuse to hand it down. The legacy stops here." Because there is no ball and there is no court IF we refuse to play the game.

Don't hate. Best regards,

Frank

I'm glad that old vile SOB is dead and gone.... That incident where he taunted Carol Moseley-Braun so viciously as he sang the song Dixie to make her cry ranks as one of the lowest moments in the Senate's history... I hate racist pigs, and I wish we could say good riddance to ugly people like him....

HARKAVY replies:

Here's the above episode recalled by the New Republic on Friday:

Soon after the Senate vote on the Confederate flag insignia [in 1993], Sen. Jesse Helms (R.-N.C.) ran into [African-American Illinois Senator Carol] Moseley-Braun in a Capitol elevator. Helms turned to his friend, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R.-Utah), and said, "Watch me make her cry. I'm going to make her cry. I'm going to sing 'Dixie' until she cries." He then proceeded to sing the song about "the good life" during slavery to Moseley-Braun.

I spent several years living in North Carolina and I finally left that racist place. The reason that idiot racist Helms was elected was because his views represented the majority of the views of those backwards rednecks in North Carolina. Good riddance, Jesse Helms. I'm glad you're gone, and I don't feel any remorse saying such a thing.

Posted by: formerNCer at July 6, 2008 4:15 PM

Your death on July 4th is nothing short of a hilarious irony that some higher being bestowed upon the nation you buttfucked for so long. B-Living here now, within WRAL's region, I get to hear all the crap about how wonderful a man he was. I'm wishing for a balanced approach, but really, there will be nothing but praise for this asshole, because he's dead. They are even playing a quote about how he's in heaven now - good thing you can repent from a life of deliberate hatred on your deathbed!!

I can't believe the comments some of you people have left? To celebrate the death of someone regardless of what he stood for is just cruel, and uncalled for. We don't know what Helms' family believed and this just isn't right whether you agreed with him or not.

In closing I wonder how many of you pricks up here that have ran him down have ever used the "N" word. My guess is 99% of you. You too will burn in hell!

Posted by: Jonathan at July 7, 2008 12:35 PM

I can't say I'm NOT happy he's gone but I won't be throwing a big party because he's (finally) dead. I did my celebrating when he FINALLY stopped running for office!! Please understand he was as hated here as he was loved. I remember fondly the old "Don't Let North Carolina Burn In Helms" bumper stickers that were VERY popular for years.
He is gone (yay!) and of course there will be tributes and so forth. It's to be expected.
FOX NEWS will tell you BUSH is great but does anybody really think so?
Don't hold Jesse Helms against North Carolina.
Just as we all hope the rest of the world doesn't hold Bush against US(A).

I generally do not speak ill of the dead (better to say nothing, I was raised to believe). But Jesse Helms is an exception to the rule: he was an unrepentant racist and homophobe, a vicious man, one of the most malignant figures in 20th century American politics. Anyone who defends him or his work should feel ashamed. Many of us will not lament his passing. And there is nothing wrong with that.

If there is a time to forgive, it is surely after death. Mr. Helms precedes us on a journey we are all destined to take. Wish him well for he knows all now. He leaves us here to contemplate our own mortality.

Posted by: R.I. Peace at July 8, 2008 10:41 PM

We're not "condemning a dead man". We're praising him for doing something right for his country for once in his hateful life: Dying.

Posted by: AlexT at July 9, 2008 1:53 PM

R.I. Peace, forgiveness is divine. You are right. And we will all die, great and small, good and not-so-good. This is true and more than humbling. However, it's rough when politicians say that someone like Helms was kind and gentle, a patriot. It's important to speak the truth. I can't imagine what it must have felt like to suffer from AIDS in the mid-80's, in the height of that crisis, and to read his awful remarks about gay men and women. Or to be an African-American as he pursued an agenda of open racism and segregation. I don't miss him. I cannot quite celebrate his or anyone's death. That would just be a cycle of hate. And it's too sad a thing that a man like this had such influence - his death is a reminder that he existed in the first place and that he left such an awful legacy. But the kind eulogies are an insult to the many people that he hurt over a long life - invisible people who did not have his power and influence. His public persona was evil. It's okay to say that.

Posted by: T. Wolfe at July 9, 2008 9:20 PM

Congress latest approval rating is 9%. Bush is at 30%. More people think Bush is doing a good job then the democratic majority in the House and Senate. Ha! Helms was an anachronism who should have been put to pasture a quarter century ago. But remember that Huey Long, Lester Maddox and George Wallace were all hardcore Democrats and racists as well. The South is messed up...always was and will be.

Posted by: thegup at July 10, 2008 11:01 AM

Let me correct my last comment: I meant to say that I cannot imagine what it must have been like to be a gay man suffering from AIDS in the mid-80's and to hear his homophobic comments as he talked about that disease. Of course, the disease affected a broad cross-section of society; AIDS doesn't discriminate. But it must have been a difficult thing to be gay and to contract this disease in the height of the AIDS crisis here . . . only to read his bile. He added suffering to people who were living through the worst moments of their lives.

Posted by: T. Wolfe at July 10, 2008 11:02 AM

Death in itself isn't a bad thing. When young children or adults in the prime of their lives die, it's pretty sad. But when an old dried up snake like Jesse Helms dies there's nothing sad about it. He was 86 years old and lived a long eventful life. And what's the deal about not saying anything bad about a dead person? If you never liked them in life, you're supposed to suddenly feel sympathetic because they're dead? I never understood that.

Posted by: shan at July 10, 2008 12:00 PM
