Jesse Helms Finally Dies

Jesse HelmsIf we're lucky, he took some of his bitter bigotry with him.

Jesse Helms, an unrepentant supporter of unnatural causes throughout his life, died of natural causes this morning at the age of 86.

The only sign of moderation ever shown by the longtime North Carolina senator was his decision to stop saying the word "nigger" when he was likely to be quoted in public settings.

The death of Helms is just about the best birthday present the United States could wish for on July 4. Free at last — of Jesse Helms.

While the networks and most of the press will soft-pedal his virulent racism and reckless disregard for the First Amendment in his hounding of artists, foreigners and many others, Helms stayed his divisive course until the bitter end — at least until the end of his public career.

After building a reputation as a frankly speaking bigot, Helms ended his public life as a liar who whitewashed those previously bold stands.

In a 2005 review of a Helms autobiography and a Strom Thurmond biography, Michael Lind noted in the Washington Post:

Like Thurmond, Jesse Helms, a fellow Republican who served as a senator from North Carolina from 1973 until 2003, symbolized the white Southern backlash against racial integration and social liberalism.

Helms gained a political following in the 1960s as a commentator on Raleigh's WRAL-TV and the Tobacco Radio Network with his denunciations of the civil rights movement, liberalism and communism.

As a senator, he explained that he voted against Roberta Achtenberg, President Clinton's nominee for a Housing and Urban Development position, "because she's a damn lesbian."

When Helms encountered protesters during a visit to Mexico in 1986, he remarked: "All Latins are volatile people. Hence, I was not surprised at the volatile reaction."

In 1990, Helms stayed away in protest when Nelson Mandela addressed a joint session of Congress.

You would never know any of this from Helms's bland new memoir, which passes in silence over the Dixiecrats in 1948 and the civil rights revolution.

Even though America has undergone many changes since the days when the word "nigger" was freely used, it's vital for us to not ban the word. We need it, in context, to accurately record our history. Black man Randall Kennedy, author of the book Nigger, has argued that point recently in "A Note on the Word 'Nigger' ":

To paper over that term or to constantly obscure it by euphemism is to flinch from coming to grips with racial prejudice that continues to haunt the American social landscape.

Jesse Helms was such a radical that he was able to fan the embers of prejudice even when he spewed the milder N-word with malice aforethought.

In "Dr. Jim Crow," a 2003 article in the Journal of African American History about the post-World War II desegregation of Southern medical education in North Carolina, Karen Kruse Thomas noted:

During the 1950s and 1960s the [University of North Carolina's] controversial role in desegregating Southern higher education would be subject to radically differing interpretations.

To white progressives, UNC was leading the way toward harmonious race relations, while white segregationists generally subscribed to Jesse Helms's notion that UNC stood for "the University of Negroes and Communists."

Many black North Carolinians were convinced that the university would never overcome its 160-year history of excluding members of their race.

The death of Helms, particularly on Independence Day, helps.

And it's fitting that he should die during a presidential race that features young black man Barack Obama.

Whether or not Obama wins, the death of Helms and the ascendancy of people like Obama represent at least some sign of progress in America.

Wow. Hate even in death. Your version of tolerance is pretty intolerant.

HARKAVY REPLIES:

Hate in life is a hell of lot more harmful than hate in death. I prefer to point out what Helms did when he was alive -- and to mourn for people who still have struggle against what he stood for.

Watch the media do Helms tributes, and soft pedal the racist, homophobic, lethal Southern bigotry that he championed all his life.
Don't forget the Senate and House tributes soon to come, and then ask yourself- what the country stands for-and who represents it.

I was once listening to David Brinkley on NPR. He said that when he was at WRAL, and reporting about desegregation efforts in Charlotte, "the station had a local tinhorn come on after me, and expose my lies." He then said as a result of that exposure, "that tinhorn was elected to the Senate, and he's still there...Jesse Helms."

He and Falwell: good riddance.

The Truth Hurts says:

Also raised a southern gentleman, my mother taught me always to look for the good in people and to honor life at death. Yet she also taught me to be honest, speak the truth, and treat others with kindness and love.

I am struggling with how to reconcile these two virtues. I am left very sad -- not at the death of an enigmatic man. But rather that he ever lived and was able to rise to a position of exalted reverence within our government. Damn this man. And may his memory live on to teach us all how easy it is to lie to ourselves about what is good and what is clearly evil.

Frank says:

"Hate in life is a hell of a lot more harmful than hate in death."

No, actually it's not. You're the one who's still being harmed and yet you're the one prolonging the violence.

Learn to let it go. I know, in this type of forum where you feel the compulsion to answer anyone who doesn't agree with you (note the 4 prior posts), you'll probably fall into the same habit of wanting to prove yourself right. A clever turn of phrase; some deconstruction; a justification... who knows how it will manifest. But it's meaningless. You're the one promulgating the violence now. So, let's just say I'm doing a McEnroe... I'm arguing for the "next call" which, hopefully, may dawn on you tomorrow, next month, next year, maybe before you reach 84 years old. Best of luck with it.

Harkavy replies:

Yes, I'm "prolonging the violence." My argument, Mr. McEnroe, is with those who focus on respect for the dead when it's the people who are alive who are the ones who need it.
I'm trying the counter the malarkey prompted by Helms's death, such the president's calling Helms "a tireless advocate for the people of North Carolina." As a race-baiter, yes, he was tireless.
Why not pick a quarrel with Bush? He's still alive, and what he said about Helms is an insult to not only black Americans but to white Americans as well.
Ball's in your court.

The White House issued a statement calling this scumbag a "great patriot". That is a slap in the face to all those who, because of the color of their skin, the country of their origin, their religious affiliation or sexual orientation, found themselves on the wrong end of Helm's hate-filled glare. It is also a slap in the face to all the white heterosexual Christians who, though they may have passed Helms' "smell test", still found his senseless vitriol offensive and disgusting.

There was nothing "great" about this man. He was an ignorant, redneck bigot who somehow found a welcoming place around this country's seat of power. The only difference between Jesse Helms and scum like James Earl Ray is that Helms got elected to the Senate before he could point a rifle at Martin Luther King.

Brian says:

I don't care how vociferously you disagree with everything Helms stood for. To state in a headline that someone has "finally" died is utterly contemptible and brings you down far lower than the person you're criticizing.

Further proof that, its journalistic pretensions notwithstanding, the Voice is still just a crude rag.

Growing up in the research triangle area of NC during the 1950’s and 1960’s, I remember listening to his vitriol spewing out of the family radio and, despite my relative youth, remaining genuinely appalled that a so-called adult would be permitted to express such shameless racist prejudice on public airways. How terribly unfortunate that this angry, narcissistic wanna-be enjoyed such a long and destructive presence in the public sphere. The fact that this scourge represented NC contributed significantly to my decision to leave a state I had always loved. Regrettably, he lives in infamy garnering appropriate Tarheel shame. He contributed nothing and stole fraudulently from all of our well-being.

Jesse Helms.........I haven't thought about him in some time. That realization by itself is heartening. While other demagogues certainly still exist, Jesse revealed himself thoroughly. Through him, even though now gone, his passing will teach us more about our government and our media by their responses. Ignoring him and his passing is perhaps worse than justifying or apologizing for his actions. Now is the time to remember and think about the hate he peddled, and how others using the same techniques to gain and maintain power and position are doing the same.

There are few people that have lived lives so full of hate and ignorance, that people actually rejoice at their death. Helms is one of them. Jerry Falwell was another. Slowly but surely these stains on the American legacy are disappearing! Any politician who used this mans death to bestow any sort of praise upon him should be ashamed of themselves. This includes the White House Spokesman and a number of his Republican colleagues in Congress. If only the mainstream media could grow a pair and attack him in his death just as he attacked so many during his life. REJOICE AMERICA !

That's precisely my point and I appreciate your acknowledging it; that's rare on a blog. Most people don't know how to count coup in an intellectually honest way. Thank you for that.

Mr. Bush's views about Mr. Helms don't concern me. I have my own. What I'm trying to get across is that whether it's Helms, Bush, or anyone else promoting hate, it's still hate. And the only way to stop it is to stop.

I'm reminded of the Melissa Etheridge song Silent Legacy. "Refuse to hand it down. The legacy stops here." Because there is no ball and there is no court IF we refuse to play the game.

Don't hate. Best regards,

HARKAVY replies:

Here's the above episode recalled by the New Republic on Friday:

Soon after the Senate vote on the Confederate flag insignia [in 1993], Sen. Jesse Helms (R.-N.C.) ran into [African-American Illinois Senator Carol] Moseley-Braun in a Capitol elevator. Helms turned to his friend, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R.-Utah), and said, "Watch me make her cry. I'm going to make her cry. I'm going to sing 'Dixie' until she cries." He then proceeded to sing the song about "the good life" during slavery to Moseley-Braun.

R.I. Peace, forgiveness is divine. You are right. And we will all die, great and small, good and not-so-good. This is true and more than humbling. However, it's rough when politicians say that someone like Helms was kind and gentle, a patriot. It's important to speak the truth. I can't imagine what it must have felt like to suffer from AIDS in the mid-80's, in the height of that crisis, and to read his awful remarks about gay men and women. Or to be an African-American as he pursued an agenda of open racism and segregation. I don't miss him. I cannot quite celebrate his or anyone's death. That would just be a cycle of hate. And it's too sad a thing that a man like this had such influence - his death is a reminder that he existed in the first place and that he left such an awful legacy. But the kind eulogies are an insult to the many people that he hurt over a long life - invisible people who did not have his power and influence. His public persona was evil. It's okay to say that.

Let me correct my last comment: I meant to say that I cannot imagine what it must have been like to be a gay man suffering from AIDS in the mid-80's and to hear his homophobic comments as he talked about that disease. Of course, the disease affected a broad cross-section of society; AIDS doesn't discriminate. But it must have been a difficult thing to be gay and to contract this disease in the height of the AIDS crisis here . . . only to read his bile. He added suffering to people who were living through the worst moments of their lives.

Death in itself isn't a bad thing. When young children or adults in the prime of their lives die, it's pretty sad. But when an old dried up snake like Jesse Helms dies there's nothing sad about it. I'll also add that I aimed specifically at Helms, certainly not at all Southerners.

Tony Snow died. I guess Jessie Helms needs a spokesman to convince God not to flush him.

I look forward to reading your tribute to Sen Robert Byrd, former KKK recruiter and also bigot, but democrat.

Sorry i posted too soon. Also that for Senator Ted Kennedy, who while always a liberal lion, certainly off the field treated women with disrespect when he wasn't driving off a bridge with one and going MIA for 18 hours..

HARKAVY REPLIES:

At least Byrd kicked the race-baiting/race-hating habit. Helms merely cleaned up his language, but he continued to spew his venom through public policy.
As for Teddy Kennedy, let's cross that bridge when we get to it.

As a person who grew up during the time when Jesse Helms was at his worst, I couldn't agree with the author of this article more.

Father Carl says:

Your eulogy showcases some of the most bigoted and prejudicial drivel I've ever read. You talk about Helms's "virulent racism." I say your article and many of the commentators here spew virulent otherism.

So, I saw the "Jesse Helms Finally Dies" headline and decided to see what the real fuss from the Liberal side was about Helms. Harkavy, you're either a terrible writer/reporter or there's really no story here. You quote a few articles that just give cursory level hyperbole and one that doesn't even mention Helms. You failed to tell you reader some specific things that the senator did to get him damned to hell by you. I'm thinking that I was right on both counts.

Everyone knew Jesse Helms was a racist.

What we all know now is how 'Liber-racist' the Village Voice has become.

Any other dead racists we can exhume: W.E.B DuBois, maybe...?

Racists come in all colors and sizes! Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton come to mind. They are white haters

Jesse Helms is a piece of human filth that has left a black eye
on America that'll it'll take eons to live down. Now we know how
Germans must feel in the shadow of Nazis. Please dear God, let there
really be a Hell. Because if there really IS a Hell then Jesse Helms
is already consumed by it's lowest depths. He's wailing for eternity
with his blood brothers; Hitler, Mao, Stalin, Reagan, Pol Pot and the
rest of the worst of the subset of human beings who have crossed from
mere mortal to eternal evil. Once more I’m glad you’re fucking
dead you piece of shit. Fuck Jesse Helms, a racist coward of a
Senator who won by divisive politics and just barely at that. Rot in
the hell you created for so many people on Earth asshole. Your death
on July 4th is nothing short of a hilarious irony that some higher
being bestowed upon the nation you buttfucked for so long. What a
surprise that Lott would come to call you a “giant” after he
patted Strom Thurmond on the back for being a good kind of racist and
segregationist. I hope that the Devil is a homosexual minority communist with AIDS and a fiery two foot dong spelunking his anal cavity for all eternity. Then he'll know how the sane minded non-bigoted people of North Carolina felt every time they had to suffer him being elected despite their efforts to remove that human shit stain from the state they called home.
