So how do you put the metro numbers in context? Well, back in 1995, three out of four New York State were murder victims were killed in the city. Now, less than two-thirds are. And 10 years ago, the city contributed 5.45 percent of the nation's murders. Now, New York's share is about 3.5 percent. So New York's murders are a shrinking part of a shrinking pie.
