FBI Crime Data: Fright Flight

Categories: Fact Check
The FBI just released its crime data for 2004, and the city's murder rate is down once again, with 570 killings last year compared to 597 in 2003. But the murder rate went down in the city and state as well. So how do you put the metro numbers in context? Well, back in 1995, three out of four New York State were murder victims were killed in the city. Now, less than two-thirds are. And 10 years ago, the city contributed 5.45 percent of the nation's murders. Now, New York's share is about 3.5 percent. So New York's murders are a shrinking part of a shrinking pie.
