Your Turn: Afraid of Crossing the Street?
It's been a deadly week for New York City pedestrians.
First, NYU grad student Hannah Engle was killed by a drunk driver with a suspended license who slammed into her at around 1:30 a.m. Monday as she was crossing at 14th Street and Second Avenue.
Just a few hours later, billionaire philanthropist Andrea Bronfman, wife of Seagram heir Charles Bronfman, got run over by a livery cab as she was walking her dog across 65th Street at 6:48 a.m. Monday.
Then early Tuesday morning, 82-year-old Eva Schweitzer was hit by a city bus as she crossed the intersection of Gunhill Road and Bainbridge Avenue, just before 7 a.m.
There's been lots of media ire focused on Engle's killer, Wole Parks, a 23-year-old actor from Harlem who played Bret in the MTV series Undressed. Parks, who has a previous drunk-driving conviction, was arraigned Tuesday on charges of driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident, and driving without a license.
The livery driver who killed Bronfman got off with just a summons for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. And the bus driver who hit Schweizer wasn't issued any ticket at all.
