Your Turn: Cops and Guns?
The NYPD expects off-duty officers to carry concealed weapons at most times. The International Association of Chiefs of Police has opposed such policies, as have some in Congress. But in 2004, President Bush signed a bill authorizing off-duty and retired cops to carry guns even if they leave their home state. That law has been cited in the New Jersey trial of NYPD deputy commissioner Garry McCarthy.
So, your turn: Should off-duty New York cops be requiredor even allowedto carry concealed weapons?
