Black Pride Hits Queens Beach

Categories: In the Streets
Thousands of LGBT people gathered at Jacob Riis beach in Far Rockaway to frolic in the ocean, sun themselves on the beach, and dance to their favorite tunes at Black Gay Pride yesterday. Among those making an appearance at Pride in the City was noted performer Kevin Aviance, who was the victim of a hate crime this past June that left him with a fractured jaw and an injured leg. People of Color in Crisis (POCC), the Brooklyn-based organizers of the event, also provided facilities for HIV testing.

Despite an attempt by the National Park Service to prevent the event, a last-minute compromise allowed the Pride in the City beach party to go forward nearly as scheduled. Most of the dancing and music were moved from the sand to a fenced-in ball field. Most partygoers the Voice spoke with were satisfied with the new arrangement (slideshow from the party is available here).
