R.I.P, You Noble Whale

Categories: Follow-Up

Thar s/he blew, in Gowanus Bay, on Tuesday.

The minke whale that wandered into our foul urban stew this week has died. Weighing as much as 5,000 pounds and leaving one heck of a carcass to haul out, the young critter braved the outer reaches of the Gowanus Canal before breaking hearts all over brownstone Brooklyn. Community Board 6 e-mailed the news to constituents late Wednesday night:

John Quadrozzi, Jr. reports that the Minke whale that appeared at our shores in the Gowanus Bay yesterday beached itself on some rocks near the Hess Station earlier this evening and passed away shortly thereafter.

I will fondly remember the exhilaration and wonder I felt when it unexpectedly swam into our lives. The moment may have been fleeting, but the impact will last a lifetime.

Rest in peace, noble soul!

Best, Craig
