Happened to catch Black Velvet James Brown at Cha Cha's Club Atlantis on the Coney Island Boardwalk Saturday night. I'm not a big tribute band fan. Don't really like impersonators either, but Black Velvet JB wrecked it. The producers at ABC's celebrity impersonator show "The Next Best Thing" should look up this guy.

Not only does he bear a decent resemblance to the hardest working man in show business, but BVJB has got most of the man's moves down and sounds a helluva lot like him. Especially the patented James Brown shriek. The musicians behind Black Velvet, Jimmy Hill & The Allstarz Band, were quite tight on "Give It Up or Turn It Loose" and about five other JB numbers they ran through for the 25 people at the Coney Island dive. But when you first heard that first shriek you knew this was no ordinary cover band.

Is it too late to book Jimmy Hill and Black Velvet JB for the Siren festival?
