"Nearly all of the violations noted thus far have been for margarine use."
— New York City Department of Health press release Sept. 17, 2007

Every now and again a press release contains a real gem. For our money, "Nearly all of the violations noted thus far have been for margarine use," is one such gem.

That piece of poetry came in a press release touting a 94 percent compliance rate among city restaurants who are cooperating with city's ban on trans fats. Out of 3,000 restaurants inspected in July and August, only six percent did not comply with the first phase of the ban, which requires that eateries use spreads and oils with no trans fat.

The great majority of those in violation were using margarine, according to a press release. A grace period ends October 1 and those still in violation will be subject to $200 fines.
