Crime, 1956: Dr. de Galindez, Two Murders
The major unsolved mystery of 1956 began in the Village on March 12. It was the disappearance of Columbia Professor Jesus de Galindez from his home at 30 Fifth Avenue.
A bitter opponent of Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo, speculation was rife at the time of his disappearance that he was a victim of violence on the part of Trujillo's followers. The police are still actively engaged in the case, working out of the Mercer Street station.
Two other major unsolved crimes were reported at the Charles Street Station. One was the murder of Pleiades Fieldgrove, of 86 Horatio Street, last September. The other was the jewel robbery that took place at 10 Downing Street.
A major crime which was solved was the murder of Louise Zicarilli, of West 10th Street last April. Assiduous following of leads by Detectives Littlefield and Pickett resulted in the capture of Anthony E. Coco, who confessed and was indicted for first-degree murder in August.
