Mr. Nearing Once Was There

By Dan Balaban

Victor Nearing wears the peaceful, pleasant exterior of a man who has married well. He has. His wife Vivian is fast acquiring fame and pelf as the TV contestant who has locked horns with another Villager, Charles Van Doren on "Twenty-One." They have come out even after three rounds of questions on the quiz show, and both appear equipped to go on trying each other indefinitely.

Village Gazette

Ravi Shankar, India's leading folk musician, brings his sitar to the Village to give a concert Friday evening, March 15. Praised for "demonic virtuosity" by one New York critic, Shankar will be accompanied by Chatur Lal on the tabla, an Indian drum, and N.C. Mullick on the tamboura, a droning stringed instrument. Brother of Uday Shankar, the famous dancer, he was for a time director of music for All India Radio.
