Bronx Cop's Perjury Will Lead to Jail Time

A Bronx detective who made false testimony about whether he interrogated a teen before the youth was charged with attempted murder will face jail time, a Bronx prosecutor told the NYPost.

In December, Runnin’ Scared posted the transcript of that interrogation, which was available only because the suspect secretly recorded the hour-and-15-minute interview with police before he was charged with a crime.

During Erik Crespo's trial on attempted murder and weapons charges, Detective Christopher Perino denied that the interrogation ever took place. After Crespo’s lawyers turned over the recording of the session as evidence, the attempted murder charges were dropped. Crespo is still serving a seven-year term on weapons charges. Perino faces time on 12 perjury charges, each with 7-year maximums, but somehow we doubt the plea deal will be that harsh.

Here's a taste of the interrogation below, but you can find the most of the fascinating transcript here:

DET. PERINO: I KNOW WHAT HAPPENED. THERE'S NO MYSTERY YOU UNDERSTAND ME.

ERIK CRESPO: YEAH.

DET PERINO: BELIEVE IT OR NOT I ALREADY KNOW WHAT HAPPENED OKAY. I DIDN’T HEAR ABOUT IT. I SAW IT OKAY. IT WAS DIGITAL. BELIEVE IT OR NOT IT'S ALL ON TAPE OKAY. PERSONALLY, I’M GOING TO TELL YOU RIGHT OFF THE BAT, I THINK YOU HAVE A GREAT SHOT AT BEATING THIS CASE, YOU KNOW WHY?

ERIK CRESPO: BECAUSE YOU SEEN THE DUDE WALK UP BEHIND ME?

DET PERINO: AH AH AH AH AH. LISTEN TO ME OKAY

ERIK CRESPO: YES
