• To the scientologist above: Give him the right to state his opinion, its his. Why cant you grant him that. The church has their point of view and has the right to express it, why cant Jason. His points are valid, your response was babble and totaly off point. Look, I am a former church member, and there is no question that there are a lot of things at the church that are helpful........very helpful toward understanding life and becoming more aware of the importance of ethics and how your life is effected by your own personal ethics. Example, listening to the state of man tapes, there is a lot of very good information on ethics and responsibility. WHAT JASON IS SAYING, AND APPARENTLY YOU MISSED IT, IS THAT AN ORGANIZATION THAT BILLS ITSELF AS THE MOST ETHICAL ON THE PLANET, BETTER HAVE PRETTY IMPECABLE ETHICS, AND IT DOESNT. Just one powerful example among many: Tommy Davis gets on live TV and says things that all Scientologists know are blatanat lies: "There is no disconnection Policy", "there is no fair game policy"..........."you can see your family once a week when your on the RPF", etc etc. When I say etc, I mean etc, there are many cases of high level staff members justifying lies for the greater good of the organization, when in reality, lying about these things is not the greater good of the organization, it actually debilitates the organization. See, this is a problem, and one not easily excusable. Why lie if your ethics are in. A clean organization can not be hurt! If you go to ethics, you are told that your own personal PR is your responsibility and you would be guided to find responsibility of your PR, otherwise you couldnt be cause over it. Yet, the church is constantly making others responsible for their own PR....the most common method: Miscatorgizing countless individuals and organizations as SP's. See, thats a lack of responsibility and an actual addmission of effect. Cause is full responsibility, and an organization with the technology that the church has......for it to be effect, and highly effect, something is amiss! How many organizations on the planet have a defection rate among its core staff (sea org) and public as high as the churches? Is the church responsible for this? NOPE, most defectors are labled / made wrong, NO RESPONSIBILITY. And that is what Beghe is saying, and he has a good point.

• This is the best. He seems like one of the most interesting people and for sure has something "celebrity" about him. Maybe it did work because his communication is the best but Scientology is a scam, but maybe those early lesson are true being that he did have an out of body moment

I've been anxious to hear exactly this sort of insight from somebody unfortunate enough to be sucked in by Scientology for an extended period and successfully emerge with their faculties intact and with the will to share the reality of his experience candidly. • Its funny, Every Scientologist that has ever responded to any of the critics in this forum or any other forum has always claimed: "I've been a scientologist for 34 years" or "I've been a scientologist for 15 years"! Has anyone ever talk to one who has been involved for less the 5 years? It appears those new members (raw meat) aren't allowed out of the gimp cage yet. • SEC I've seen in one of your comments that you don't need license to survive "in or out of Scientology" Plus understand that while I cannot speak for every single person, I know myself and a lot of others have no problem with you being a Scientologist if that is what you think. I believe we all should follow what we believe is true and respect peoples decision to follow the religion they choose just as I hope they respect mine. My problem is with the Church of Scientology, not the members. If I am correct even the main Scientology website says Scientology means "The Study of Truth" If that is true then how can you, or any other Scientologist for that matter continue to ignore the blatant signs that something serious is wrong with the Church? I don't claim that I know everything, or that even everything I've heard is true, but I have heard enough to believe a lot of these acts do happen, and what I have seen has appalled me. I don't care if you are Scientologist, Buddhist, Muslim, Christian, we are all humans, we laugh the same, cry the same and feel the same pain, so how can you ignore this if there is even the chance of it happening? If you are really in Scientology to help the world as I've heard some say, then how can even the smallest doubt be ignored. I know from what I have read that you might be told not to listen to me, I am a crimnal, immoral, or I just don't know what I'm talking about. But I bet I know more than someone who is made to hide from these issues instead of confront them. I might no be perfect, but I have no reason to lie, I could be perfectly happy turning my back and ignoring all this, but I feel angry over what happens to people and frustrated when I read about how people might feel something isn't working, or something is wrong. And they are taught to hide it so they end up thinking "they" are the problem when the person next to them must feel the same way. If that is true, then what a lonely life it must be to always wear a mask. Religion should make you happy, not afraid. Eh, I apologize I have really gotten off subject and ended up rambling, but I am human after all and I do mean these words. I just hope you will actually give them true and honest consideration if you read them instead of thinking I am wrong off the bat. • Dear fellow Scientologists: Sec, Hubbard says that "The truth is YOUR truth, the truth is what YOU believe". So to tell Jason that he can't handle the truth, is not completely right. He is handling <i>his own thruth</i>, and he has the right to do so. I don't believe Hubbard literally ment for us to ATTACK people in the sence of judging them, pushing them down and trying to discredit them. Even though he said <i>attack, don't defend</i>, I don't think he ment for us to attack all our critics as if they were stupid, false or criminal. I think he ment for us to attack their arguments, not their integrity. I mean, the way we are attacking our critics now, are actually not attacks at all, it's DEFENCE. It's verbal violence as DEFENCIVE ATTACKS. This "war" between Scientologists and our critics, is unnecessary and will dissappear as soon as we ourselves start to act more sainly in the public room. To be able to clear the planet, we have to act with compassion, never in a defencive way. We have to take a look at ourselves and ask howcome we have been so alienated from society. We can't keep on declaring everybody as liars just because we don't like what they have to say. Scientology is too valuable for us to discredit by our defencive attacks against our critics. And I have to say, that if Jason is declared an SP by CoS, we are all SP's. It's time for us to question CoS and how they are using the tech when dealing with media and our critics. I can't see any reason for a Scientologist to raise his voice to anyone, and specially not on TV yelling at some journalist. A Scientologist should be able to be consisent without having to yell at or discredit anyone. This is basic ARC.

• Beautiful! Jason, you are my new hero! There are a lot more ex-scientologists than scientologists. So nice for us finally to be represented by a sane, honest voice. Mind control is not done in the ways that are depicted in Lifetime movies. One of the first things that you learn on your auditor training, is that it is the job of the auditor to control the pc's attention...and you do. It's monotonous--and even more mind-numbing for the auditor who sits in a state of 'being there' for hours and hours. If you are taking a course, if your mind wanders at all from what you are studying, you have to find the word in the materials that you don't fully understand and look it up in the dictionary. Fidgeting, stray thoughts are all not allowed---answering questions on the material, you have to respond instantly, without thinking.... Hours of study, mind not allowed to wander--tell me that doesn't hypnotize a person....... It's very, very real and as another "past-life-Clear" and trained auditor who is coming out of the fog, I applaud this man. When you are stuck in the cult, you are told that all the people ranting out there are either religious bigots, under psych influence, or just plain suppressive. It's not until your out that you realize that so many of these voices are from ex-members or families of members who have lost their money, their minds, or a big chunk of their life. As a cult member, you cannot talk to someone who has been kicked out or left--so, unfortunately, you never hear the other side of the story. You never hear the TRUTH.

(Too many 'smoking guns,' if you ask me - and far too many to list here.) What is the "works" when you say "Scientology works?" Do you just "feel better" - or do you actually have demonstrable, stable gains - easily verifiable by the outside public - as opposed to subjective realities and experiences? You fail to mention your case, admin and training levels - and how much money and time you've invested. Are you 100% SATISFIED and VGIs? What, specifically - in layman's terms - are the Native State abilities you've rehabbed? Did you know that in the '60s and '70s, the O.T. Levels actually had people doing kinesis and telepathy and exteriorization drills? LRH was a brilliant man, no doubt. But, from my own empirical observation as an auditor, much of his material is THEORETICAL...the POTENTIALITIES of the theta being. That's totally fine. But, to promote it and sell it as a factual, attainable, tangible reality?... WHERE'S LRH NOW? Target Two?...BS! Wouldn't you agree that Scn, ultimately, is all about escaping the whole cycle of assumption/birth > life > body death > between-lives forgetter implant restim/amnesia? Yes, I think we could agree on that. Good. Well, THE ULTIMATE DISSEM 'TOOL' THAT WOULD EVER BE - AND THAT WOULD 'D.A.' • Merill, come on, at least don't use the OSA form letter! I've seen the same comment, verbatim in at least five other comment strings talking about the Beghe videos all over the net. At least Sec had a new (and verrrrry long) script from the OSA goons. They don't let you watch the whole thing, do they? I'm sure they don't, cause the seed of doubt would have to be laid. I know the drill. It's very much like when I gave up magical thinking and became an atheist�the seeds of doubt were planted and I just couldn't keep up all the crazy justifications for the way I wished the universe was. Actually, reality turns out to be better than I could have imagined. I've read Dianetics and thought it was crap, but "A History of Man" . . . now, there's one of the great masterpieces of unintended hilarity. I defy anyone to read it without howling with laughter.

• dianetics is a convoluted mishmash of psych theories hijacked by lrh for his own purposes...he repackaged them as "self-help" and then further repackaged them as what equates to the "bible" of scientology. dianetics is an extremely painful read...run-on sentences, racism and grandiose and unconfirmed accounts aside. i recommend boring out ones eyes with a power drill as an alternative.

• I have been a scientologist for 20 years and have run into some of the frustrations that Jason talks about. Occasionally I have indeed asked myself just W.T.F. is going on as Jason mentioned quite often. I would have been very interested in the interviewer asking Jason what are the good points about scientology and what if any positive gains or wins he had and still has ? I think Jay is pissed mainly about the Benjamins which I'm sure he is addressing. In my case I am not brainwashed, have invested a good chunk of money over the years and have gotten services for what I paid. Not always to what extent I guessed it would be but in hindsight I am better off today overall because of scientology than without it. Have I seen improvements in tech over the years...you bet ! That is a good thing. I would tell anyone that scientology will benefit everyone but is not for everyone. If you are reading this and of an open mind go to your local library and grab a dianetics book and make your own decision. Scientology helped me get off of the drugs (like Jason) I had been dabbling with. It helped me get my ethics in and gave me the roadmap for a happy and successful life. I am happily married to a non-scientologist for 17 years and am successfully self-employed. I do attribute my good fortune to scientology. Finally, if you have ever done any type of drugs do yourself and all aroung you a favour and take a look at the book Clear Body Clear Mind. It will tell you the long term effects of drugs and what you can do to rid the body of them. If you could only do one thing and no more in scientology do the "Purif".

• I left at Scientology-clone cult about 4 years ago at OT 3. Congratulations and enjoy! to Jason on the prospect of rediscovering himself. Something that really explained things to me was the 8 methods of thought reform identified by Robert Lifton. Scientology uses these in spades. 1.Milieu control All communication with outside world is limited, either being strictly filtered or completely cut off. Whether it is a monastery or a behind-closed-doors cult, isolation from the ideas, examples and distractions of the outside world turns the individual�s attention to the only remaining form of stimulation, which is the ideology that is being inculcated in them. This even works at the intrapersonal level and individuals are discouraged from thinking incorrect thoughts, which may be termed evil, selfish, immoral and so on. 2.Mystical manipulation A part of the teaching is that the group has a higher purpose than others outside the group. This may be altruistic, such as saving the world or helping people in need. It may also be selfish, for example that group members will be saved when others outside the group will perish. 3.Confession Individuals are encouraged to confess past 'sins' (as defined by the group � for example, out ethics). Discussion of inner fears and anxieties, as well as confessing sins is exposing vulnerabilities and requires the person to place trust in the group and hence bond with them. When we bond with others, they become our friends, and we will tend to adopt their beliefs more easily. This effect may be exaggerated with intense sessions where deep thoughts and feelings are regularly surfaced. This also has the effect of exhausting people, making them more open to suggestion (e.g., two hours of TR 0???). 4.Self-sanctification through purity Individuals are encouraged to constantly push towards an ultimate and unattainable perfection (OT 8). This may be rewarded with promotion within the group to higher levels, for example by giving them a new status name (clear, OT, etc.) or by giving them new authority within the group. 5.Aura of sacred science The beliefs and regulations of the group are framed as perfect, absolute and non-negotiable. The dogma of the group is presented as scientifically correct or otherwise unquestionable. Rules and processes are therefore to be followed without question, and any transgression is a sin and hence requires atonement or other forms of punishment, as does consideration of any alternative viewpoints. 6.Loaded language New words and language are created to explain the new and profound meanings that have been discovered. Existing words are also hijacked and given new and different meaning. The consequence of this is that the person who controls the meaning of words also controls how people think. The meaning of special words may also be revealed in careful illuminatory rituals, where people who are being elevated within the order are given the power of understanding this new language. 7.Doctrine over person The importance of the group�s ideas is elevated over the importance of the individual, personal beliefs and values in all ways. Past experiences, beliefs and values can all thus be cast as being invalid if they conflict with group rules. In fact this conflict can be used as a reason for confession of sins. Likewise, the beliefs, values and words of those outside the group are equally invalid. 8.Dispensed existence There is a very sharp line between the group and the outside world. Insiders are to be saved and elevated, whilst outsiders are doomed to failure and loss (which may be eternal). Who is an outsider or insider is chosen by the group. Thus, any person within the group may be damned at any time. There are no rights of membership except, perhaps, for the leader. People who leave the group are singled out as particularly evil, weak, lost or otherwise to be despised or pitied. Rather than being ignored or hidden, they are used as examples of how anyone who leaves will be looked down upon and publicly denigrated. People thus have a constant fear of being cast out, and consequently work hard to be accepted and not ejected from the group. Outsiders who try to persuade the person to leave are doubly feared.

• Right on Jason! I bought into some crazy stuff several times in my life and I can attest to the minds ability to justify the insane. I mean come on, read the history of men like LRH and Latter Day Saint founder Joseph Smith and really ponder how someone could possibly buy it. I guess thats just being human. Don't fret brother! • ALLOW SCIENTOLOGISTS to voice their viewpoints no matter how ridiculous or defensive or protective or biased they may seem to you. When you are in "the bubble", like I was for 19 yrs., you can't be convinced. You have to realize first you are in a bubble. You have to be having "doubt itchings" like Jason implied. These criticisms (like Jason's) cause Scientologists pain, a lot of pain, and their intent is to get rid of the pain by DESPERATELY looking for "outnesses" or things that they can hold on to that allows them to invalidate the whole criticism. If they can find ONE, just one perceived "outness", then it allows them to put down the rest and not have to confront them (remember the cognition Jason had that in doubt you look for data to counter the doubt?) The source of the pain is not Jason, it is the "ridge" that is there in very many a Scientologist, their strong resistance to the incoming put down of THE ONLY THING that keeps them stable and feeling they are valuable. Without Scientology they are lost. Please understand that, to someone who has become a Scientologist, Scientology being a fraud or having any major flaws would be equal to lifelong Chritians being given evidence that Jesus never existed or that he was caught lying or making things up a few times. Let's not rub it in or attack them or ridicule them. When it was done to me while a Scientologist it just drove me further into it and made the bubble stronger. I did not want to, and, much more significant, could not acknowledge to myself the things that I perceived were very wrong with Scientology. It took a twist of fate to unbecome a Scientologist, blindly following Ron's and the Church's "absolutely correct" viewpoints and start being in contact with ME and regaining my own viewpoints and the freedom to have them. Let's apply what Scientology or souls who have become Scientologits cannot because of the limits constructed into that identity: GREATNESS which although it is preached in Scientology and never applied has as one of its meanings: To be able to maintain being loving and behaving decently and respectful towards anyone despitehis/her invitations to attack or ridicule or put down him/her. Allow them to have the space to think for themselves, to question, to have a viewpoint. Let's not be like Scientology imposing our viewpoints as THE only viewpoints that can be had or attacking the contrary viewpoint of another or others.

• Can he say one &%#�%! sentence without using the %&#"�! F-word? The parts of the inteview I have seen so far appear as just bad acting to me. Hollywood drama. If you use the F-word you get people nowadays to listen. They mistake cussing for sincerity. And if it isn't acting - so what if he "escaped" the cult? You don't lead people to Jesus by complaining about some cult you were dumb enough to enter, and then using foul language that nobody(?) can bear listen to (if they're hooked up right).

• Beghe speaks for himself. Whether he was lying then or lying now is actually anyone's guess, no matter what side you're on. Anyone can believe anything or anyone they decide to. If you're against Scientology, Beghe can now be YOUR hero. When in Scientology, he was preaching to the crowd. So now he's preaching to the opposite crowd. He's good at that. Probably qualifies him to run for president in 2012. Truth and integrity are minor considerations in politics too. Most of you could vote for him with a clear conscience I'm sure-- and nothing would change in that area either as a result. Believe Jason Beghe, only if and because he suits YOUR agenda. That's easy. Obviously I'm not preaching to the crowd here. That would be easy too. I still have a point of view, and don't need anyone's license to survive in or out of Scientology. So what?

If you paid over 1 million dollars or even just 100 dollars to scientology for what was supposed to be the best of services life can provide for the spirit and got more and more messed up as time and sessions went by ( as has happened to many ) you would probably be willing to see that there is something so wrong with the picture that there is a possibility that it was all based upon lies. Most likely you are a poor staff member, deprived of proper food and shelter, family ties, the basic enjoyments of life given up in exchange for what Beghe describes ( and I have observed )as a selfless life of helping where group entrapment and compliance is the product. You didn't come into scientology to become what you have been made into. None of us did. Your integrity begins with your essential right to think for yourself and Scientologists are conditioned to discard that right. Listen to the video interview in full. be willing to consider what he's saying by taking off the blinders. It was a relieve for me after 18 years to finally think for myself and do what was right as opposed to what scientology dictated I should think. There are more former scientologists out in the 'wog world' than there are in scientology and there is a reason for that. Stop being afraid to think for yourself.

• Re: domestic abuse: Many people who study cults (such as rick ross) refer to abusive domestic relationships as "one on one cults" precisly because the systems of control are so similar. There are even a few books written on the comparison.

• In the 90's I read Jason Beghe's first interview in Scientology's Celebrity Magazine. Lots of progress and lots of big wins-- according to Beghe. A few years later, I saw a video of Jason sharing his successes from a high level set of processes called the "L's". Again, Beghe was very enthusiastic about his many gains. He was very much just being himself at that time too. Nobody else was speaking for him. Again, there's an integrity issue here. Just keeping it real.

• As a Scientologist for 34 years I can speak directly to the other side of this story. I've continued studying and applying Scientology because it works. It is a very difficult path that requires significant self-discipline and commitment. The results in bettering one's life and the lives' of one's fellows are tremendous. It is a highly structured sequence of steps and to me the key has always been ensuring I fully grasped the step before moving on to the next. I've seen too many Scientologists try to take shortcuts, skimming over important materials and moving on without the correct foundations. Their results have been poor, often with the conclusion that "it doesn't work". I've also seen many Scientologists mis-apply the techniques and policies to their own detriment and the detriment of others. I look at this as zealotry, not a good operating basis for anyone in any activity. It is the job of each and every Scientologist to maintain their own integrity and refuse to agree with actions they deem wrong, whether inside their own church or in the secular world.

• Dear Sec, I hope you can see that Jason deeply respects most Scientologists. I respond in that spirit. 1. Q: Why was Jason upset that his son was "kicked out" of a "Scientology school" AFTER he left Scientology? A: Because his little boy lost all his friends (who presumably, aged 4, weren�t driving him insane) at once. His son was sad and lost. Of course Dad was upset. 2. �Psychiatry�s side� - By that, Jason meant �what will psychiatry argue against the CCHR data?� He wanted to be prepared to put CCHR�s case against the best arguments psychiatry could put up to counter it. But no one in CCHR could articulate psychiatry�s arguments. 3. Jason told about his first and most significant win on day 1. He also said that he had many wins in the early years. He was honest about that � and honest about the fact that he�s struggling to explain fully how he could have �bought� the con for so long. It�s not hard for many of us to understand when we compare Jason�s experience to that of anyone who has stayed in an abusive relationship for too long. The person is usually in denial � trying to hold onto their image of the other person and the relationship even though the facts have begun to show that person/relationship doesn�t or no longer exists. The human mind has incredible capacity to lie to self. I do accept that this is evidence of a lack of integrity, but only in the sense that no one has 100% integration of thoughts, beliefs, values and actions. We�re all a little dis-integrated. The more dis-integrated, the less sane we are. But the sanest among us have the capacity, often hard won, to see our own internal inconsistencies and to be moving toward integration. So, actually, I see Jason has a man of great (and growing) personal integrity and that, ultimately, is why he couldn�t keep holding onto the beliefs when the facts showed him those beliefs were false. Some people can never screw up the courage to face that reality. To me, this �journey� � to use the clich� toward personal integrity is the essence of spirituality. 4. Jason doesn't suggest that he speaks for Scientologists; only for himself. 5. You say to Jason, "You can't handle the truth!" Obviously, I saw in those videos a man who is willing to confront his own mistakes and, as he put it, �stupidity� � and to admit to the world his own complicity in fooling himself. I guess I�d ask you, in the quietness of your soul, whether you are able and willing to consider the possibility that you, too, are fooling yourself that all is okay when reality says otherwise. • A Scientologist responds: Even though Jason speaks the language and has undoubtedly rubbed shoulders with the top Scientologists, there are just a few inversions-inconsistencies within his own story: Why was Jason upset that his son was "kicked out" of a "Scientology school" AFTER he left Scientology? If he left Scientology because out of concern for his own sanity and well-being, what then about the well being of his 4 year old child? One would think that this parent would have removed his son from the perceived dangers prior to himself disconnecting. It's not logical. When Jason talks about Hubbard's disagreement with psychiatry and CCHR's role, he says that no info. is ever provided about "psychiatry's side". However, CCHR's primary function involves compiling enormous amounts of documented information for the general public. Throughout the basic books of Scientology, Hubbard goes to great pains in describing and differentiating the approaches of Wundt, Pavlov, Freud, Jung, Adler and others. Beyond simply "railing" against that field, Hubbard repeatedly provides conceptual and technical explanations as to the workabilities and unworkabilities of various approaches to mental therapy throughout history. Anyone, including Jason Beghe, can read the basic books of Scientology for extensive dissection about what makes people more able and what doesn't. The subjects of hypnosis and brainwashing are addressed at great length-- as well as how to reverse the effects of such practices. Check the CCHR website or even yet, as an alternative, consult the works of Dr. Thomas Szasz (a non-Scientologist) instead. How could an NYC born & raised, street savvy, no-BS, practical minded guy like Beghe spend so many years in Scientology before finally realizing it was making him worse off? In all that time, through all those levels, did he NEVER experience a win or a gain? And now everyone, Scientologist or not, is just supposed to believe his rant? How masochistic is that? How victim is that? Mr. Integrity-- NOT. I know that he attempts to address his experience and the years, but I just don't buy it. I will acknowledge that he's a pretty good actor. Whether you are a Scientologist or not, you can't not come away from this without at least considering that Jason Beghe has some interesting personal integrity issues. C'mon, 14 years in Scientology! He's no Mel Gibson, so an anti-Semetic rant would probably go unnoticed. One way or another, Jason Beghe's success is rolling along because of in spite of Scientology. Either way... Speaking of the "other side of the story", Scientology has one. Many Scientologists, who Beghe STILL credits as "good people", have plenty to say in support of Scientology and in their own ability to be individuals. Beghe talks Scientology savvy but he doesn't speak for Scientologists, plus he reverses key Scientology fundamentals for his own dramatic effects. His complete story must be a real doozy. A truly compassionate humanitarian like L.Ron Hubbard would probably say have something like this to say about Jason Beghe: "He'll get it all sorted out on up the line." To Beghe, I say: "You can't handle the truth!"

• Fabulous stuff. Finally an intelligent person speaking about Scientology in an intelligent manner. At one point, he made an analogy to domestic abuse. The now deceased, ex-Scientologist and critic Robert Vaughn Young drew the same parallel. I can see how it starts the same--you start out on cloud nine with the most wonderful process/person in the world for you (the fit seems so perfect) and when one day you wake up and realize that it has all been a lie, the "information" can be impossible to assimilate. PTSD. Which is why so many people would rather stay in and go crazy rather than go through the pain of getting out. Jason is fortunate in that he has money and friends and family outside Scientology that he can go to, but many "in" -- especially those in the Sea Org have no money and no human relations outside Scientology. Much like the women of the FDLS compound.

• This is a fascinatingly detailed interview. I found the section in which Beghe dealt with the sense of regret over having invested so much time, money and energy into what he now calls "a con" to be deeply moving. It also sheds light on how seemingly rational, well-meaning people can convince themselves and the authority figures in their lives (in this case "auditors" and other higher ups) that they have had great successes as a result of the things the authorities are selling them. They're too financially and emotionally invested in speaking the truth. It made me feel very very sad for people caught in this trap.
