Silda Spitzer Steps Out, David Cook Wins American Idol and All the Rest

Categories: Tabloided

Today is a day full of all kinds of little, interesting stories in Tabloidland. Here's q quick rundown of the "Best of the Rest."

First of all, the Daily News puts a smiling Silda Wall Spitzer on page one. The former first lady of New York hosted a benefit for her Children for Children foundation. She looked radiant in a Carolina Herrera gown, which was in contrast to the tired, stone-faced woman who watched her husband's political downfall two months ago. The Post places the beaming Spitzer on Page Six.

Speaking of Page Six, today's column features my favorite response from a flack in quite a while. The gossip column reports that Gossip Girl star Michelle Trachtenberg doesn't like to mention her female co-stars in interviews. When Page Six called Trachtenberg's publicist for comment, Jessica Kolstad replied, "I don't know how you live with yourself." Meow!

American Idol named its winner last night, and there was a 100% chance the guy would be named "David." David Cook beat David Archuleta by 12 million votes, despite judge Simon Cowell's pronouncement Monday that Archuleta's performance should bring him the title. Both papers play the story as a "huge upset," but how is 12 million votes an upset? Seems like a lock to me. Points to News scribe for describing the 17-year-old Archuleta as "a human Bambi, immune to cynicism and open to faith" and Cook's preferred genre of songs as "hand-me-down grunge ballads."

Both papers also cover the announcement by American Airlines that the company will start charging $15 per bag checked on domestic flights. The front page of the Post declares this "SKYWAY ROBBERY" and both papers include quotes from weary passengers asking questions like, "What's next, pay toilets in coach?" and complaints about how overhead bins are going to be even more crowded now.

That's not the only discomfort travelers will suffer. The Daily News reports that the MTA is going to be locking subway bathrooms between the hours of midnight and 5 am. The closure allows cleaning crews to work uninterrupted. Something tells me this is not going to make the subways smell any better.
