Bingo!: The Times Climbers Make Identical Headlines

Categories: Tabloided

What's not to love about when the two tabloids perform a mind-meld and use the same headline for the front page? OK, it's not exactly the same since the Daily News made its banner read "The New York Climbs." Still, we have the same idea and execution: a pun on the name of the publication and using a font reminiscent of the logo of the New York Times.

The reason for the freak show is that not one, but two, people decided to climb up the side of the Times building on 8th Avenue. First up was the "French Spider-Man," Alain Robert, who climbed up at 11:39 am, according to the Post. Robert has performed this stunt before, scaling the Eiffel Tower, Empire State Building, the Golden Gate Bridge, and others. He finished at 12:20 pm, but not before he unfurled a banner reading, "Global warming kills more people than 9/11 every week" on the 15th floor of the building. Robert says he was performing the stunt to raise awareness of the issue.

A few hours later, Brooklyn climber Renaldo Clarke decided to hike up to the top, after he watched Robert climb on TV. According to the Daily News, Clarke left work early and donned a "Malaria no more, save the children" T-shirt for his climb, which ended at about 6:30 pm.

Both papers paint these guys as total nut jobs, the News going as far as to label them "Lunatic #1" and "Lunatic #2" in the photos on page 5. The Post calls them "daredevils," and both of the tabs show pictures of the building, shocked on-lookers, and the climbers.

The two may have "raised awareness" for their issues, but they also raised the ire of Mayor Bloomberg, who excoriated the pair for "jeopardizing other people's lives. You could fall and kill somebody. And it's not just not acceptable." The pair also each were slapped with charges of criminal trespass and reckless endangerment. Clarke was taken to Bellevue for mental evaluation.
