Voice Choice: Macbeth

Categories: Voice Choices

Macbeth has had the reputation of being a theatrical jinx ever since its opening night, when the boy playing Lady M. died backstage. Superstitious actors won’t even pronounce the title once they’re within the auditorium. (Most refer to it as “the Scottish play,” but we’ve also heard it called “Macbooty.”) However, it’s been a rather lucky year for Macbeth, with the Patrick Stewart production transferring to Broadway and now this exciting take on Shakespeare’s tragedy from Polish director (and recent Obie winner) Grzegorz Jarzyna. With the help of St. Ann’s Warehouse, Jarzyna and the TR Warszawa theater will present the play in the grimily gorgeous environs of a former tobacco warehouse on the DUMBO waterfront. The production will apparently include “blood, fire, water, and parachutists.” What could possibly go wrong? Opens today, through June 29, Tobacco Warehouse, Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park, 26 New Dock Street, Brooklyn, 718-254-8779, stannswarehouse.org, $35–$100 ALEXIS SOLOSKI
