Voice Choice: The Miracle Show and the Death of Optimism
![]()
Choreographers Shannon Gillen and Elisabeth Motley love cracking jokes. The duo pours as much humor into their works as they do their modern-dance training. As a part of this year’s outdoor “SiteLines” series, Gillen, originally from Maryland, and Motley, whose roots rest in Virginia, premiere their latest site-specific piece, The Miracle Show and the Death of Optimism. They enact a satirical funeral with all the fixin’s—memorial attendees and woeful song included—in loving memory of our dear friend Optimism. The service is supposed to inspire hope and maybe even bring on a miracle. How many of those do you get to witness during your lunch break?
