People in the Park
This Friday at 1:30 in the afternoon, April 17, Dorothy Day, Ammon Hennacy, and a handful of others from the Catholic Worker will sit on the benches in City Hall park. The only thing unusual about this is that millions of their fellow citizens will be taking shelter from a hypothetical Hydrogen Bomb—for April 17 is our annual tribute to that insanity we call "Civil Defense" when we are all required by law to take shelter.
Dorothy Day and those with her have little time for sitting on park benches—thy run a house of charity for the derelicts on the Bowery and in their spare time publish a monthly paper. This will be the fifth year in a row that these sainted crackpots have stood their ground against the State of New York. And, in all likelihood, this will be the fifth year in a row they will be arrested as a menace to the State... -- David McReynolds
