Cold Sweat: James Brown Estate on the Block

jamesbrown_snoop.jpgIf it is your long-cherished dream to wear a jacket that was once doused in the sweat of the Godfather of Soul, save the date: this Thursday, Christie's will start dropping the hammer on James Brown's worldly goods, reports the New York Times.

Brown's estate has been in contention ever since his death on Christmas Day 2006, with various members of the Brown family tussling with estate executors. Brown's children have been particularly upset that their late father's will seemed to leave most of his wealth to his grandchildren and to charity rather than to themselves.

The struggle over the auction, however, was not among relatives but between two sets of trustees -- the old ones, who wanted to block the auction, and the news ones, who wanted to enrich the Brown estate with it, and in whose favor South Carolina Court of Appeals Judge Jasper Cureton ruled.

jamesbrown_dracula.jpgAmong the items to be auctioned:

• Two pages of handwritten working lyrics to the song Everybody's Got a Thing by James Brown (estimated price $2,000-$3,000).

• A black Halloween style Dracula cape with red interior (estimated price $1,000-$1,500).

• A Silver Fox fur coat (estimated price $1,000-$1,500).

• A black wool jumpsuit with rhinestone embellishments, "J" along the collar and "SEX" along the mid-section (estimated price $5,000-$7,000).

• Signed photographs of Brown with President George W. Bus (estimated price $200-$300) and Snoop Dogg (estimated price $100-$200).

Christie's is located at 20 Rockefeller Plaza. Sale times are 10 am and 2 pm.
