Cruise Ships and the Art of Piracy

Categories: Follow-Up

the-art-of-piracy.148626.51.jpg The Times today notes that cruise lines are bolstering their revenue with on-ship art auctions that tend to take advantage of passengers who don’t really understand what they’re buying. Jori Finkel’s fine piece goes into detail about some accusations against Park West Gallery, a company that most cruise lines, except Princess, use for selling art. Two years ago, one of our sister papers located where most American cruises originate — South Florida — did a similar piece about complaints against the in-house art auction program at Princess and its questionable sales methods. For an entertaining look at the way Princess makes passengers feel like art experts before picking their pockets, take a look at Kelly Cramer’s “The Art of Piracy.”
