Please Don't Shoot at the Big Glowing Thing in the Sky
If you've ever thought to yourself that the various rides in Central Park -- the boats, the horse-drawn carriages, etc. -- just aren't worthwhile because they don't fly, then friends, you're in luck.
Tomorrow, the city will begin offering 10-minute rides in a helium balloon departing from an area just west of the Bethesda Fountain in Central Park. AeroBalloon USA Inc. is running the attraction, which is being billed as part of the 150th anniversary of the park's original design; on the company's website, it says that riders can "get a spectacular daytime view of Central Park and bustling streets, or wait until sundown and float above dazzling city lights."
The balloon will carry a pilot and four people at a time as high as 300 feet into the air and will be illuminated at night. Tickets are $25 for adults and $17.50 for kids and the whole thing runs until August 22nd or the balloon is tagged by local graffiti artists, whichever comes first.
