Byrne Bike Racks Include Tribute to Show World

byrnerack.jpgDavid Byrne has designed nine bike racks and, he says at his website, the DOT has agreed to install them in Manhattan and Brooklyn. We are charmed by the slipper-shaped design (for Ladies' Mile), amused by the abstract squiggle (for near MOMA), and repulsed by the guitar-shaped rack (for Williamsburg), though the place needs bike racks so badly we must still welcome it. But we're genuinely surprised by the "Olde Times Square" design (pictured) destined for 44th Street and 7th Avenue. The DOT approved this? It looks as if the sleazy Deuce of years past is now sufficiently distant that even our government regards it with fond, forgiving nostalgia. The 70s is the new Gay 90s.
