Great Journalism Lives in Rockaway

jashya.jpgThere are many reasons to love The Wave -- Rockaway's Newsletter Since 1893. Its local political column is called "Beachcomber." It runs sweet, boosterish community stories like "Another Sensational Summer At Camp kidsmART," and letters like this. And now and again its writers display a much subtler style than we expect from a neighborhood paper.

The following is from The Wave's story today about the sad death of two-and-a-half-year-old Jashya Brown, which has been well covered in other local papers, though with no more elegance than is found here:

The tot's mother, 20-year-old Sheree Brown, discovered her son's lifeless body Monday evening at the family's apartment at 217 Beach 31 Street, after coming home from work, taking a shower and cooking dinner for her boyfriend and her other two children.

In that great city room in the sky, Ring Lardner and Damon Runyon are clapping their notebooks in approval.
