Daily News Votes Yes on Willets Point Development

willetsforgotten.jpgThe New York Daily News today editorializes in favor of the Willets Point development that (as we have reported) has enraged some local businesses. The News says the anti-development crusade spearheaded by Councilman Hiram Monserrate "threatens to restrict affordable-housing construction across the five boroughs," and is outraged that Monserrate "wants the city to meet prices demanded by the property owners before the Council gives the project the go-ahead," which would end up "forcing the city to pay more than its legal obligation." The words "eminent domain" do not appear in the editorial.

Gotham Gazette looks at the anti-development position from an environmental standpoint: "In seeking to build New York City's first 'green' neighborhood, the city could instead add to global warming and endanger that very same community."

Now's as good a time as any to link to Forgotten NY's excellent photo essay on "The Neighborhood the City Hates."
