Voice Subject and Reputed Mob Boss D'Amico Gets 2 Years

damico.jpgJohn "Jackie Nose" D'Amico, covered most recently at the Voice by Tom Robbins last May, has pled out to extortion and today received a sentence of two years, reports Newsday.

The reputed head of the Gambino crime family had been charged in February with racketeering conspiracy by the Eastern District U.S. Attorney's office. That Mob sweep netted 62 defendents, of which, per Newsday, D'Amico and sixty others have pleaded guilty: "One case was dismissed. One defendant faces a murder trial."

According to a Feburary report in the Sydney Morning Herald, the Gambino family had requested large payments from an associate (identified in court documents as "John Doe #4") in exchange for their permission to sell his cement company. These included $100,000 upfront and, later, the $300,000 share of the proceeds due to the partner of the associate. D'Amico was implicated in these transactions as part of the Gambino "administration."

Some highlights of D'Amico's career with the Gambinos have been covered in the Voice. He's mentioned in William Bastone's 1998 and 2000 accounts of Mob activity in the drug trade in New York clubs. In May, Tom Robbins revealed that D'Amico, in addition to his other duties, served -- on paper at least -- as a salesman for Big Geyser Inc., "the city's largest distributor of healthy and cutting-edge beverages."
