9/11, 5 Boroughs

Commemorations of the attacks of September 11, 2001 are planned or have been held in all five boroughs. Mayor Bloomberg will hold a private remembrance tomorrow at Zuccotti Park at Liberty Street between Broadway and Church Street, starting at 8:40 a.m. The victims' named will be read and four moments of silence will be observed, one for each plane strike and tower collapse. The Fire Department will hold a separate event in Memorial Park at West 100th Street and Riverside Drive starting at 8 a.m. The now traditional Tribute in Light twin beams go on at sunset and fade with the dawn.

The College of Staten Island unveiled a memorial plaque today bearing the names of 27 CSI alumni who died in the attacks. Tomorrow Mayor Bloomberg will join Borough President James Molinaro for a ceremony honoring 274 Staten Island victims at 6 p.m. at Postcards, the borough's September 11 Memorial, on the St. George Esplanade near the Ferry Terminal. Other ceremonies include a 5 p.m. tribute to fallen firefighters at the Alice Austen House Museum.

On Tuesday the names of 142 Bronx residents who died on 9/11 were read at a memorial service hosted by Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion at the Bronx County Building.

Council Member Tony Avella hosted a memorial motorcade on September 7 that visited 16 Queens intersections named for residents who died in the attacks. The Little Opera Company of New York holds a 9/11 performance of the first act of Puccini's La Boheme at 6:30 p.m. in Socrates Park. Other events include a 7 p.m. candlelight vigil in Juniper Valley Park.

A number of Brooklyn remembrances are listed in the Brooklyn Paper, including two events sponsored by State Senator Martin Golden, one at 6 p.m. by the Fillmore Avenue Field House in Marine Park, another at 8 p.m. on the 69th Street Pier at Bay Ridge Avenue and Shore Road. At both ceremonies balloons will be released as a tribute to the victims. The Silver Brown Dance Company will hold a memorial dance performance in Brooklyn Bridge Park at 7 p.m.
