Midnight Summ.: Violence and Indian-American Politics

reedsmilllane.jpgAt this writing, BreakingNewsNY reports busy times on 127th Street: an emotionally disturbed person, armed with a knife, at 10 East 127th (subdued, in custody), and another EDP barricaded on the 3rd floor at 175 West 127th (outcome unknown). Also: shootings at E. 58th and Avenue J, North Elliot and Flushing Avenue in Brooklyn; at 2175 Reeds Mill Lane, 2374 University Avenue, and 2801 White Plains Road, and a stabbing at 2758 Holland Avenue in the Bronx; another EDP "trying to assault people" at a church on Brewer Boulevard in Queens; and an overturned car at Taaffe Place and Park Avenue in Brooklyn.

The India Post News Service runs an item with a New York dateline claiming that "Republicans among the Indian-American community" want their constituents "to be concerned" about Joe Biden, whom a difficult-to-find organization called Indian Americans For McCain says "ignorantly engages in Indian-American stereotyping." We were able to locate an Indians for McCain website, which links to an old YouTube clip of Biden saying that "In Delaware... You cannot go to a 7-11 or a Dunkin' Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent."

A "Church-loving Brooklyn Mom," 63-year-old Katrina Anderson, was killed by a blow to the head over the weekend in her Crown Heights apartment, reports the New York Daily News. Police suspect robbery as the motive.

Also in Crown Heights, an unidentified cyclist went through a red light at Bedford and Union Avenues and was hit by a cab Sunday afternoon. He's in critical condition, says the Daily News.

Some Williamsburg Hasidim are pissed because a big "90210" billboard visible from their neighborhood shows women in swimwear, says the Brooklyn Paper.

We have conflicting reports about an incident involving a runaway horse-drawn carriage in Brooklyn. WNBC says the carriage "crashed" into a livery cab; the Daily News says the carriage hit a light pole, and its driver was thrown onto a nearby Town Car. Both sources agree the carriage was hired for a wedding, and that the unpleasantness occurred around 12th Avenue and 65th Street.
