NYC RFD: Tappan Zee Going Down, Christmas Lights Going Up

tappanjam.jpgThough the Tappan Zee Bridge is only 53 years old, the state Transportation Department says it's not worth fixing and proposes to replace it with a new bridge, says NY1, which describes the Tappan Zee as "one of the most consistent traffic bottlenecks in the region." No clue as to what the new bridge will cost, but the Department's study cost $54 million.

New York has three percent of the nation's population and 32 percent of this year's MacArthur "Genius" grants. This tells Clyde Haberman of the Times that New York is good for smart people; several winners agree.

Antoinette Steifer was headed to a senior center luau when she was struck and killed by an 18-wheeler at the intersection of McDonald Avenue and Kings Highway in Brooklyn, reports the Daily News. She was 91.

People complained to NY1 that the Nissan dealership at 47th Street and Eleventh Avenue was parking their merchandise on city streets and not even feeding the meters. The cops got wind of it and towed several of the cars yesterday.

At the corner of Adams and Livingston in Brooklyn Heights, at least, they're already putting Christmas lights on the trees, says McBrooklyn.
