Rangel's Resort Troubles Increase

rangelrests.jpgCharlie Rangel's non-disclosure of income from rentals at his Dominican villa, which story the New York Post broke and upon which the New York Times amplified today, now draws formal complaints from the National Legal and Policy Center, the same conservative activist group that filed charges against Rangel with the FEC when he had his extra-apartment problems in July. Rangel's spokesman has portrayed these non-payments as a good-faith, I-forgot sort of thing, but the NLPC, which is heavily funded by Richard Mellon Scaife's right-wing foundation cluster, has asked both the IRS and the Justice Department for a "criminal investigation."

It has also been revealed that Rangel was not charged interest on a loan he received from the developer of his villa. Rangel's spokesman says that's no big deal because the developer did the same thing for other investors who were not Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee.
