End of an Era
Today, the final dobbin will trod his weary way, assisted by Alex Skely, out of the Empire Boarding Stables at 182 Thompson Street. The 86-year-old horse hotel -- Manhattan's last stable for dray horses -- will be demolished by its new owner, S.S. Rajah, an exporter from New Delhi. The Indian builder will replace it with a seven-story structure replete with swimming pool in the basement and Japanese garden in the rear. This compact, south-of-Bleecker Street Shangri-La, which is what it will be called, should be ready for occupancy by the end of the year.
