Gotbaum Rates the STD Clinics: Chelsea's the Worst

stirrups.jpgBroke, sexually-active New Yorkers take note: Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum has done a survey of the 10 walk-in STD clinics operated by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and finds some improvements over their operations in 2006. All clinics now offer general STD screenings and standard HIV tests, and doctors are available at eight of them (Chelsea and Corona are the holdouts). But most clinics require that you arrive before 3 p.m. to get a rapid HIV test, don't offer Hepatitis C screenings, and aren't open outside standard business hours. Gotbaum's surveyors says Chelsea's is the worst clinic, with "no doctor available, a dirty waiting/reception area, and rude and unhelpful staff." Gotbaum recommends several improvements, as well as "mandated" (as opposed to the currently "recommended") sex education in all city high schools.
